1998 S70 T5-M Where did this halfshaft come from?

Post by GutlessSupreme »

I went to go replace the destroyed outer boot on the axle on my '98 S70 T5 w/ manual trans yesterday, and when I went to slide the new boot (EMPI 86-1103-D) on the axle shaft, I noticed that it was way too small. The hole for the shaft in the boot is 25 mm. The shaft itself has a 33.4 mm OD.

The part number on the shaft is P9163581. It is a Volvo sticker with the manufacturer Lobro written on it.

I didn't take any pics, but this is the same shaft:
http://www.elferink.nl/GB/Volvo/C70/Fro ... 0030524X16

I can't find any information on this halfshaft assembly online other than seeing it show up on a few scrapyard sites and ebay in Sweeden/UK/Netherlands etc.

I also looked through the GKN (Lobro) catalog and found nothing with a shaft diameter over 30 mm for Volvos:

So, my question is, what is this shaft and where can I just get a replacement boot for it?

Last resort is to get a junkyard halfshaft or aftermarket one, but this one's fine other than the boot and I'm being cheap. I'm gonna try to visit the local dealer tomorrow and see if they can at least tell me what it came out of, since I'm pretty sure it's not original.

Not sure but manual axles are different than the automatic ones. Maybe you got a boot for a automatic axle?

Possibly, but from everything I've researched so far, I can't actually find evidence of this axle, with a ~33 mm shaft diameter, existing. I can find it for sale as a used part, but I can't find documentation/parts for it anywhere.

I've seen parts for 21, 25, and 28 mm, and then I've seen evidence that a 30 mm OD shaft also exists. But I've found nothing on this particular one.

This is indeed a very tricky question that can only be answered with: 'BECAUSE VOLVO'

The sticker on your driveshaft says: P9163581 [empty space here] 5CYL,T/DIES.MAN. V/L
On paper it seems to be a driveshaft intended for a 5cylinder turbo diesel P80 with manual gearbox. 850 TDI and S70/V70 TDI got a special version of the M56, including driveshafts. However it seems like Volvo also used this driveshaft on other model variants as it will fit any P80 up to mid 1998.

I went round and round with NAPA when I re-booted one of my '99 XCs. They sold me what should have worked but the inner boot wouldn't fit at all. It turned out that my axle had been swapped out at some point and they used a manual axle instead of an automatic. The axle worked fine but its pieces didn't square with the catalog when they looked things up based on the year and model.

After I had them bring every Volvo variant up to the counter they in fact had the correct GKN/Lobro boot but the computer would have never selected it.

The receipt for it went off to the accountant since I am self employed and auto repair expenses are tax deductible for my business. Sadly I can't put my hands on it to get the part number.

I have one of these cars and the axles for these cars are a one off model special for the 1998 t5m, I believe they have thicker shafts and different outer cv joint. Together these changes makes them unique from both the 1998 manual na cars and automatic t5's. In 1999 the transmissions changed and so did the axles for all models.

I don't have a part number for the '98 t5m axles, but as I understand it all 1998 axle shafts are interchangeable in that they will all fit, but won'the be quite as strong as the original.

In the past I had Raxles rebuild my shafts when the boots tore, but you have to send themail your axles since they don't have any in stock. I was very happy with their service and turn around time. Shipping wise they are in Florida. I have heard good things about a company in west as well, maybe in CA or Colorado, but I don't remember their name at the moment.

There is a good discussion here about the differences between the t5m and others axles:
