Re: 99 v70 glt running rough
Suppose I clean the current etm and it improves the idle, how long do I typically have before it will eventually fail for good?

I think Im the record holder for the longest lived original 1999 ETM at 137k miles and 12 years.

The wife's original ETM is still going strong on a '99 V70 with nearly 200K miles and coming up on 16 years on it.

Im in a solid second place...
Be careful with cleaning so you don't get solvent into the electronic part of the ETM. And, if you open it up and it looks clean like mine, don't mess with it.
The part that goes bad isn't the throttle plate, its the sensor inside the ETB that is a mechanical wiper. I want to say I drove mine for a year or so, maybe 15000 miles before it finally went permanent limp mode and I had to deal with it.

2 questions:
So I'm taking things apart to get to the ETM and I find this part with the hose missing. Where is the hose that connects to this part in the second photo? Would this cause rough and fluctuating rpms at idle like I am experiencing?
Second question is in regards to the charge air pipe being in the way of removing the cooling fan. Do I need to take charge air pipe off to be able to remove the cooling fan? Seems like a nightmare to attempt loosening the charge air pipe clamp from Etm with the coolant fan in the way since.

Purge valve for evap emissions. Missing hose there will cause rough running.
Use under hood vacuum diagram to put that Right

UPDATE:
SO I got the new etm from Xemodex and put everything back including the hose hose that was disconnected. It started up fine but started sputtering every little while. No codes!
Basically it was idling smooth and then starts sputtering randomly. While drivingit it will drive smooth with power then there will be a series of sputters then it will smooth out again. at higher rpms it revs smooth but at lower rpms it starts sputtering. Not sure if I mentioned this before but the car was sitting for a good 6 months so I am suspecting that the fuel filter is clogged since it is intermittent at low rpms and smooth at high rpms and there is no CEL.
Any suggestions?

Is the fuel in the fuel tank the original from when it was sitting for 6 months? If it is you may want to drain it and put fresh in. Modern gas goes 'off' quickly. If the tank is low, then add fresh fuel to dilute the old and see if that helps. If he filter is of unknown vintage it is worth changing anyway.
Next to check would be fuel pressure. Pressure should be 42psi at the rail minimum.
Sounds like you are getting there!
A good long run may help also to blow out the weeds.
Neil.

Thanks Scot850 for your reply.
When I got the car, there was very little fuel in it and the gas light was on. On the drive home I put in around 30 litres of 94 octane fuel from Petro canada in hopes that it would clean out some of the gunk from sitting. I drove it around 30 kms since putting the fuel so most of the fuel in there is newish.
I think I will put a new filter on and do a italian tune up on the highway lol.
I will post an update.
