98 S70, N/A, yet another P0455 question...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey guys, hope you all getting reading for another weekend of Volvo tinkering! (Apparently it's going to snow this Sunday here in NYC!)

I know the P0455 is a topic that has been beaten to death... And yet, it still keeps rearing it's ugly little head!

Do elbows in this kind of condition usually throw a P0455? Wouldn't a bad elbow only throw a P0442? Also, that's an Air Pump Check valve, right? (This should really be modded, no?) The P0455 always happens on my wife's car right after a thump sound coming from the left side of the engine...

You can find replacement rubber elbows at the chain store for few $ -- 2-3mm OD would fit nicely. I use a tiny drop of glue to hold it in place.

That is EGR value at the exhaust manifold.

How is rubber hose connections at the fuel filter?

No clue. I changed the fuel filter when I got the car, you know, the whole stage zero thing. And didn't really pay attention to anything down there... My J and L hoses leave much to be desired and I'll get to those as soon as I get a weekend with sun!

I walked into two Autozones yesterday and they didn't have any elbows! I'm going to try to wrap them in shrink wrap tape and see if they hold. Thanks about the glue tip. That makes sense to me.

Thanks for pointing out that EGR valve!

Do know know what trips a P0455 rather than a P0442?

It isnt a part, the code generated is driven by what happens during the EVAP cycle check procedure.

The detailed description on this and the codes is here on MVS...somewhere.

Also looks like you are missing the pre-heat pipe from the exhaust manifold heat shield to the air box. This just helps speed up the engine heat-up process on an NA. Unfortunately Turbos don't get this.

As abscate says, the P0455 code is usually caused by the Evap system doing a vacuum check and finding it can't pull a vacuum as there is a leak in the pipework somewhere, or a valve has failed.

The two codes would effect MPG, suffocate CAT, or is it fried oxygen sensors -- take care of it. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 5&start=40
The valve Neil points to is likely attached to fan assembly -- located under the fresh air intake. Most owners at MVS have repaired or replaced it -- looks like this.

Neil, something is missing from the exhaust manifold heat shield? Really? (It certainly looks like something is missing... Two times while I was working on the car my dad goes to touch that pipe saying, I think something is missing here... And I stop him just in time before sticking his hand around it!)

Is it important? What does it look like? My brother has a 98 V70, N/A and it looks exactly the same.

xheart, I'll check out my valve. There was something my mechanic swapped on the car when I went to get it inspected, the "customary" part in order to get that sticker.. I wonder if it was this. I'll get in there and check it out. Thanks for the direction.

I cannot find a decent picture showing the preheat pipe. Many drivers of older Volvos (850's and P80's) with NA engines through this pipe away for some reason. Also folks do this due to the thermostatic flap valve that this pipe runs to in the lower portion of the air-box can fail with age forcing warm/hot air constantly into the air-box even when you don't want it. So they throw away the pipe and jam the air-valve closed so the air-box only pulls cold air in. Fine for warm climates but not for cold ones!

The picture (from MVS) shows just a portion of the aluminum corrugated pipe that runs from the heat-shield on the exhaust manifold to the air-box under the distributor. This is not on turbo cars as said before. You can see it about mid-picture and is about 2" in diameter.

Neil, wow, thanks for the schooling. Looks like dryer vent tubing... I'm thinking it's definitely worth hooking up in the winter.
