Considering a Volvo - "Lower Gasket Leak with smoke"?

Post by mtd240 »

It's been awhile since I posted here (been awhile since I owned a "newer" Volvo :P). Looking at picking up another '98 XC. Guy says the engine is "blown", according to his mechanic (who apparently knows a lot about Volvos). Car starts and runs, then starts smoking a lot after a little driving, through the cabin even. (it's not the heater core)

The mechanic told him it is a "lower gasket" that would require pulling the engine to replace. I am having a hard time believing that..it's been over a year since I last worked on one of these, but memory tells me there aren't any "lower gaskets that require engine removal". Seals maybe - rear main - but no gaskets. It was hard to figure out what was wrong, but my best guess is that something is leaking onto the exhaust and burning off.

Now the question - is the oil pan gasket right above the exhaust? I can't remember. A better guess would probably be a seal (or two [or three]) leaking oil onto the turbo - cam, oil cap, or even a turbo seal of some sort (don't remember much of what's back there). Clogged up PCV. Car probably just needs a little attention at 175k miles.

Anyway - opinions?

You recall correctly, the engine stack only has one "gasket", the head gasket. The other layers are sealed with anaerobic sealant. Also, there is nothing above the exhaust that would leak oil. Most likely would be turbo seals or O-rings on lube lines to/from turbo. How fast does it consume oil? Does it start immediately and run smooth?
Rear main would cause a drip or puddle on the floor, not a cloud. Rear cam seals might allow oil to get blown to the exhaust?!

Run a compression check and block-check the motor for basic peace of mind, then go crazy fixing every little thing on it!

Could be the PCV is blocked and forcing oil into the top of the head and then it eventually works its way out the back top cover and drains down the back of the engine. May explain why it takes a while to start as it needs time to build pressure after starting. Other suggestions from FLX90 also stand. Even the oil filler cap seal leaking for a long time can do this.

Thanks for the replies guys. So, probably PCV or turbo. Actually, probably both, after 175,000 miles.

I can't really ask the guy too many more questions - I think I asked too many up front ha! I'll try to figure out if it runs smooth - I doubt he knows how fast oil is disappearing (he doesn't even know if oil is disappearing). I'll go take a look at the car, and check PCV pressure and do a compression test. Perhaps make sure the driveshaft is still in, too..

He only wants $400 for it - so if the body and interior are in good shape, and it doesn't have major rod knock, I'll probably pick it up.

Sorry to post multiple times.

I asked the seller if it ran smoothly. He said yes, until it starts to overheat, hiss, and idle sporadically . I just can't figure this guy out. Anyway, I'm guessing headgasket now, for sure. Still worth the $400 though, I think.

Check for exhaust gases in coolant.

As a parts car. For the cost of getting a daily runner, I would look elsewhere.

Block-chek, available at NAPA, or "rentable" at auto parts stores, checks coolant overflow tank for exhaust gas. Sounds like this car has a breached gasket.

If it is immaculate (for a 15-20 year-old car), then maybe find a crashed good runner to harvest a motor from, or just keep looking.

Is it a car, a hobby, or an addiction? :D

Almost unanswerable!!

OP you have experience with AWD so I defer to you but I think I wouldn't go for an engine pull on one of those, I would save my efforts for a nice T5.
