2005 V70R nothing works and won't start

Post by RunarN »

Hey guys, I need your help, I have 05 V70R that started acting up a couple of days ago, one morning the car unlocked fine, put the key in the ignition and nothing happens, nothing electrical works except the central locking (remote doesn't work anymore though) and the electric seats. I changed the battery later in the day and it worked normally then, was OK for a couple of days but now it's completely dead, my first thought was the CEM so I have removed that to check for water ingress, corrosion or something but everything looks fine. any ideas what I should check ? thanks

Lets start with voltage at the battery and then at the underhood fuse box main connection ( under the black flap)

12.5V at battery and 12.45V at the connection under the hood

Sorry that happened but good diagnostically. Looks like a main power outage.

Lets check the main power cables to the battery for contact and corrosion. Please remove the negative first and clean both. They can look clean and have corrosion between batt and connector. Use meter ( especially when car is dead ) to check voltage at batt terminals and then batt connectors

If that doesn't fix problem:
Lets open up steering column cover to expose ignition switch and its wires.
Lets probe for main power and switchable power.

Cleaned terminals and checked voltage at battery and under the hood, everything seems ok, I will check the ignition switch and wires tomorrow, anyway the car started again and i managed to pull codes with vida, 10 minutes later it died and everything with it. I did notice when it first started when i pressed the on/off button on the radio everything turned off for a split second and then came back, to me this seems like a bad main ground or something like that, i just don't know where the main battery cables go from the trunk on their way to the front of the car Image

Clear all of those codes. Lets see if the configuration issue returns. Battery cables on an R run up the battery side of the vehicle. Check VIDA parts diagram for that electrical harness and you will see it.

We need to get stable power first before trusting codes. You should still see power after it stalls. Make sure ground wire in trunk is clean at body and terminal.

After ig switch lets go to ECM and make sure pins are clean and power is stable.

IF SAS and config remains after stable power is established.
If steering angle sensor issue returns then make sure to go into the BCM with VIDA/DICE and reconfigure it to see the SAS and other modules.
It looks like a bad steering wheel angle sensor - common failure.

Hey JDS60R first of all, thanks alot for the help, I really appreciate it. Anyway I'm getting no voltage at ign switch at any of the pins, but i am getting 12.7V at all the fuses under the hood expect for fuses 3-11. ETM, o2 sensors, pcv, ECM, injectors, ign coils etc. And also getting power to fuses for power seats, climate control fan and both front door modules. And also some fuses on the CEM but I did not check what they were for. I think I'll remove the ECM now and check that. Still everything is dead, no lights nothing, only door locks work but not the remote.

About the alternator, with the engine warm at idle and no a/c at battery it should be between 13.5V-14.2V

Yeah it's at 14.2ish at idle.
Just removed the ecu, everything looked normal, but I am getting no power to it, measured at pin 17.
