V70-XC Transfer case

Long story short and I see this is a popular topic on here. 2000 V70 XC...thought needed new driveshaft..bought new one. Took to mechanics and while he was getting it up in the air, the back tires spun freely in park. Vehicle making whining noises on the way there and then would make a loud BANG! I drove slowly. Transfer case shot? And where do I get good used ones.

If the rear wheels turn and the new prop shaft turns with the car in park then it is a sure bet that the transfer case is shot.

A pick-n-pull is the cheapest place for a replacement but you never know for sure what kind of shape it is in when you buy it. Places like Erie-Vovo usually have a case in stock and they will warranty it but they are quite a bit more expensive than a junk yard.

With all used parts "you pays your money and you takes your chances" but you can do some basics at the junk yard by turning the output flange on the case and see if it turns or not when the donor car is in park. On a loose case you can spin the output and see if it feels relatively smooth and that the coupler turns.

Decision time: Do you really need the AWD function? If not, the faulty angle gearbox (transfer case) can be removed completely, and the car run as FWD. Some consider it sacrilege to perform such a modification, but many have run this way successfully. My last V70 ran this way for the last 100,000 miles I owned it.

If you are intent on keeping the AWD functioning, then have your mechanic pull the angle gearbox out, and inspect it and the spline coupling that connects it to the transmission. If the coupling splines have failed, that might be all that needs replacing. If the gearbox is damaged, then search on car-part.com, using the search term 'transfer case'.

If you do go the FWD route, the spline coupling must stay in the transmission to seal that opening. The coupling is often seized tight to the transmission anyways, as luck would have it. There should be some method of retaining it just in case it ever does come loose, though. Here's the simplest option I've seen:

Assuming the transfer case (bevel gear or angle gear for most of us on MVS) has actually failed, then finding a good replacement is the challenge, and ensuring you get the correct one for your car/year. The only difference I could find between a 2000 XC and R was the collar between the transmission and the angle gear. I'd recommend changing that is you decide to replace this unit.

Also check the diameter of the output flange to the prop-shaft. Again different years had different diameters, I'm not sure they are interchangeable.

Good companies to deal with are East Coast - Erie Vo-Vo, West Coast - vandsautodismantlers, and there is one in the south that used to sponsor here I think they were called Southern, but I have not used them personally.

The advantage of buying from these guys is you will get some form of guarantee, and the unit can be checked prior to ripping your car apart. I'd recommend re-sealing it, in particular the rear seal to the prop-shaft.

renns suggestion of going FWD is a good option is you do not need AWD.
