CV joint clicking

CV joint clicking

For the past 5k miles I have had a clicking sound from one of the passenger side axles. It started out sounding like a small rock in the tire. Barely notable. But over the past 5k mile it has become much worse. The sound does not change when turning. No knocking when turning. Up until yesterday, there was no leaks from the cv boots. The front outer just started fleeinging grease. Since the clicking does not change when turning , does that mean it is a rear axle or maybe the front inner joint?

Have heard a knock/clunking sound from front wheel drives cars when turn. Which is always a bad outter joint. But I have never heard the rock in the tires clicking sound before.
I can ever so slightly move the front shaft up and down, is that normal or sign of a bad CV?

It is possible it is one of your cv axles, but the rear ones do also articulate and move with the movement of the rear suspension.

Based on what you are saying I would remove the 2 RH wheels and inspect your tires for a nail or screw in them.

Thanks, definitely not anything in the tires. Makes the same noise with summer and winter tires. Has gotten progressively worse over the past 5k mile, and a lot louder over the past 1k miles.
I Have pulled both tires off and inspected. None of the CV boots where torn or leaking while this noise has been going on. I have been checking periodically for a torn boot. Found the front right otter has crack But that is within the last 300 miles.

Still curious about the slight up and down play in the fron shaft.

Pull the drive shaft and keep Colorado Driveshaft on speed dial!

TO check the shaft by hand for play, the center bolt/nut needs removed. Is the carrier bearing turning easily when the axle is turned by hand with the wheel off ground?
Normally if the cv joint goes bad, it will click when doing a tight turn in a parking lot - moving slowly.

Oragex- I will pull the bolt today and check for play.
The wheel/wheels all seem to turn smooth with no sounds or grinding or anything.
The clicking stays the same if I am going straight or turning. No excessive clicking/knocking/clunking when turning

When cv joint is going bad it firstly starts with clicking on turns.
Replacement is necessary when it starts clicking with driving straight.

If this noise started when you had good front CV boots
and you've never serviced your front to rear driveshaft:

Get the car safely into the air. Jack stands are manditory.
Inspect the boot on the front CV of the AWD driveshaft.
It's mere inches away from your catalytic converter.
They ALL bake, crack out and disintegrate away.

I now know for a fact it is not the CV joints. I still have no idea what is causing the noise. I have been under the car numerious times in the past few weeks and the shaft end looks good and no play or leaking. I replaced my bevel gear last year and the drive shaft looked fine.
I have been thinking drive shaft since none of the CV boots where leaking and the front two shaft are new with RAxles.com axles.
I don't hear the noise from the driver side when driving next to other cars or a wall the can bounce the sound back. I only hear it on the passenger side and more in the rear.
Diff fluid is full and clean.
Wheel bearings seem ok with no play or roughness when rotating by hand. Don't wheel bearings make a humming noise when going bad, not a clicking?
It sounds like I have like 15 pebbles stuck in my tires

Next I guess is to remove the drive shaft and see if anything changes. Since it is summer I don't mind.
