01 Volvo V70 T5 Wagon - clicking motor in dash navi display

My "in the dash" GPS/Navigator display started to make intermittent sounds when it is in the down position. It sounds like the motor that pushes it up is making a brief attempt to start, but the display stays down, and the navi system is turned off. If I turn on the navi system it comes up, and stays up, and no more sounds from the motor.
Any ideas what is going on? :?:
