I can read the codes if it has a problem (I left the gas cap off my 99 F-150 just to play with it more...), but I cannot get it to reset the service light. Is there a procedure or something I have missed?

The service light is not part of the onboard diagnostics and is reset using some combination of button pushing or other tool I believe. Matthew has a summary of service light resets somewhere on this site.

Me and Tsquared are right in the 'zone of expensive tool needed' to reset sl, given our model year.

You're so lucky!

I'm not sure the generic OBD tools would be able to handle that kind of special case (mfr-specific code probably). Hence the need for the expensive version of the gizmo.

Just to add my 2 cents, using a K&N filter on any vehicle can cause the MAF sensor to malfunction purely from the oil on the filter. This is not to disparage the K&N filter, it just means you need to be careful about the amount of oil you use and perhaps clean the MAf once in a while.

This is the third time I have received the 102. When I got it the first time 40k ago I was on an all expence paid trip in Kuwait for Uncle Sugar and my wife carried the car to the local INDY. He pulled the Air filter, cleaned and re-oiled it, cleaned the MAF, and reset the code for $45 (his minimal shop price). He also told my wife that it would happen again due to design of the K&N. He also highly recomends the K&N.

Second time was last summer.

I think it is worth the extra agrivation.

Hi Matt,

What OBD-II scan tool are you using with your laptop? Is it the one from www.scantool.net?

Thanks,
Geevs

Hi Matt,

Have you tried your OBD-II interface with some of the free software availaible at:

www.scantool.net
www.wgsoft.de (in German)
www.digimoto.com (I believe there is an eval version).

Maybe these SW will work better. The Digimoto is especially appealing.

Regards,
Geevs
