Fuel tank leaks after fill up, 2001 V70 T5
Fuel tank leaks after fill up, 2001 V70 T5
Just brought home a 2001 V70 T5 wagon, overall a clean car. 136K miles, nice runner. Filled it up last night, went to bed, woke up to massive gas leak in driveway and enough smell to freak out the neighbors. Definitely leaking from tank area. Is this a filler neck or vent hose issue or what are the other possibilities? It's still dark, at the time of this post, won't be able to see much for another hour or two. Thanks!

A pox upon the seller for knowing about this and risking a fire in someone else's life to make a dollar
Probably a simple hose fix but you might have to drop the tank to get to it.

No need to drop tank in most cases.regierart wrote:Just brought home a 2001 V70 T5 wagon, overall a clean car. 136K miles, nice runner. Disconnect battery.
Remove rear seats (see youtube video for this), peel back rug and open access hatch.
Clean all the fuel up, spray with brake cleaner or other solvent and paper towel, get as clean as possible,
let dry and disconnect fuel line and elec connector.
Get some JB weld water weld, or the marine version, good under water and resists gas.
Fill the round molded part with a cross in it, thats where they develop the leak.
Leave it to cure overnite, worked on mine last week.
Be sure to install seats and plug in the seat harnesses before connecting the battery or you'll trigger an SRS code.

Probably just a bad seal on that ring. If you can let it dry, you can open that up and replace it without draining the tank.

Its different to mine, someone may have replaced the pump and not put the threaded ring back properly or re-used old seal, I believe it should be lubricated to get it on tight enough to seal properly, well good news is its something simple , if the area was dry you'd be stuck having to drop the tank instead and thats way complicated (remove rear subframe, seperate exhaust, drop drive shaft ).
So far, so good. I cobbled up a quick tool for the threaded ring, and all came apart beautifully. The o-ring looks and feels fine, but I'm taking no chances and getting a new one. A lot of grit around the cup area, I think with a very careful cleaning and reinstall, I might, maybe, be good to go. Appreciate all your advice, very much.
