99 S70T5 ETM compatability

I think I have been forced to admit I need to change the ETM in my car. I believe my part# is 9186793 (does that sound about right). I have searched out junkyards in the area and don't have many choices for donars, the websites don't say if the cars are turbo or not. I am hoping to get lucky and find one plug and play,but am not counting on it.

So my question is what part numbers are most likely to be plug and play, and which models could I find them on. And which part numbers and which models will work, but need to be reprogrammed. And which ones just won't work period. ei will one from a NA work or does it have to be a turbo? Will one from a LPT work or do I need one from an HPT? Also do they need to be in the car to be reprogrammed? I would prefer to pull the one out of my car first, before pulling one from the junkyard just so I can figure it out in the comfort of my garage with a tasty beer

Thank you for the offer Scott! I am in Edmonoton. Can you reprogram an ETM with Vida? If so it might be worth my while to make a trip down to cowtown!

With my system I can run checks, but not the re-programming of an ETM, it needs a software download. I have a spare ETM with the same part # in my spares. I think it was from a 2000 V70XC, so programming may not be compatible. When I got it I followed precopster's advice and connected it to my 2000 'R' and it went through the start up sequence (buzzing and the flap moving). It is an old white label unit. I keep it as a spare for re-build if I ever need it as my car has a Xemodex modified unit currently.

There are a bunch of S/V/XC 70's here at PnP in Calgary, but I think only the V70 XC's are clearly turbos. There are 4 S70's and a V70 that are 99 or newer but no idea if any have the needed part(s).

9186793 is the valid part number.

Any 8644346, 8644347, 36001822, or 36050563 may have the right firmware if fitted to a turbo.

If you purchase a new 36050563 it is pre-programmed with the latest firmware for 2001 XCs or 2.4LPTs.

Unfortunately without connecting Vida to your car you won't know which programming numbers you might have. Vida gives a Network report and all modules can be identified and cloned if required.
MVS member doublebug can connect to your car and reprogram any ETM (whether from turbo or non turbo) if you have a Volvo Dice tool. He can read your current fw level and reprogram the donor ETM once it's plugged in.

Okay just to clarify, I might be being a little bit dense but I would like to double check. Neil, you have a 918679 you believe to be from an xc70 ( are xc's lpt or hpt or both), and it worked in your V70r without reprograming?

No you are not dense. But what Mike (precopster) told me is that it MAY work in my car, and it was a good sign that it went through the start cycle, but I never had it running in my car as I had no need to try it. It may run if I had connected it to my car or it may not. All I know is it wasn't dead. I only did this by connecting it to the ETM cable in my car and switching on the ignition to make sure it wasn't a dud unit to store for that day I may need it as a re-build base at Xemodex. Since then it has been in a vacuum sealed bag with desiccant on a shelf in my garage.

Would it work on my car or yours without re-programming? I don't know nor does Mike.

Mike, with my copy of Vida connected to my car, should I be able to read the software versions of the ETM on my car or the spare? I am not well versed with Vida as I have had little need to use it (thankfully) so far.

Mike, to recap any of those part #s you listed will work, but probably will need to be reprogrammed. And if I find them on a turbo (does it matter lpt or hpt) I might be able to just put it on and go? Do P2's share these part #'s? Keep in mind I am referring to a used unit. And doodlebug can reprogram a used unit If I get one from a PnP?

Another question? They ETM is programmed to the ECU right? If I found a HPT at a wrecker and took both the ETM and the ECU and installed it in my car, would that get around needing to have the etm re-programmed or would it just cause problems with other components in the car?

Henry (user double bug) needs you to have a running copy of VIDA connected to your car and an internet connection to write software to your ETM. He charges about an hour of labor to do this...about $100 USD last I remember.

There are instances of people bolting on PnP ETMS and driving away about 50% of the time, if they match part numbers.

On a 1999, every module has to be matched to all the others (I think there are a couple of exceptions) - your ETM and ECU would be happily paired, but none of the other modules would.
