Another note regarding MAF: I went slightly nuts trying to track a poorly (from slightly to very) running engine a couple years back that kept sending O2 codes. Replaced both O2 sensors, ran fine for a little while, then the same thing happened. Confused, I decided to switch the MAF with another unit i had laying about. Cleaned both MAF wires with CRC cleaner, swapped them back and forth. Only slightly better. Still getting O2 codes, I took it to a shop and the DEALER, who told me that it was the O2 sensor. Not believing them, I just took it back and thought I would do some more research. Finally settled on buying a new MAF. That turned out to be the cause and was apparently pushing codes for the O2 sensor. So, if anyone is getting these symptoms, you may just want to pop for $100 for an aftermarket brand or $225 for the blue box. I ended up buying a Bremi and it's been working for about 8mo. now.

Amazon has the OEM Bosch MAF for $150. I picked one up a few weeks ago. It even came with free 2-day Prime shipping, fulfilled by Amazon themselves.

I have found it difficult to remove the air cleaner hose. This forum post suggests removing the air cleaner top and turn th base sideways, to wiggle out the MAF body. I cleaned my old MAF Sensor but we could only drive our 1998 Volvo V7-XC 200 feet before conking out. Maybe I don,t need to remove the hose, just the air box. will try that and post an update.

The trick to removing the air cleaner from the snorkel is to tie up the snorkel with strong cord to the upper engine torque mount. That gives you a good pull on the air cleaner body to pop it out of the snorkel tube. Inspect when done, for cracks and breaks. New snorkel tube is about $100 but still available from Mother Volvo

VOlvo makes a special tool for this of course, shown in this thread, must be green...

In that same thread, ChuckW reminds us the MAF insert can be removed from the plastic housing using Torx security bits and skip all that madness

I just recently bought a set of 5 point Torx bits for this job. Way easier to swap without having to remove the whole unit!
