My overdrive seems to be malfunctioning. When I have it on (the indicator light off) it just seems to turn off (light comes on). I could push the overdrive button and sometimes the light would turn off, but it would come back on very quickly. Now the overdrive stays off (light on)...so now it's like a 3-speed I guess. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Overdrive on an '89 240.
I fixed the overdrive on my 82 240 and my 88 240.
In one case, I hardwired the switch in the shift knob to always be engaged; full time overdrive activated.
In another situation, the problem was the wire which loops under the tranny and ends at the overdrive solenoid was badly frayed. Fixing the wire resolved the problem.
You may need a replacement relay. It is accessed by removing the glove box. The relays are mounted under the air vent towards the top of the center console.
