Do I have the wrong idle tensioner?

Post by Go Metric »

Trying to replace my idle tensioner, and I think I've got the wrong one. I've seen both replaced online, will this work for my 2002 v70xc? Mine has the bolt head on the pulley, but the one I was sent has the t-60 torx fitting for detensioning.

Is anyone familiar with the difference between the two?

Thanks!

You can't just look at it. You need to compare the part number to your VIN (at Volvo or with VIDA).

Yeah, I'm sure you're right. I believe I may have been sent the tensioner for the high pressure turbo. It's from contitech kit number c8 adk0039p, which came with a belt as well, the tensioner is part number 534010310. It's Slovakian made.

I guess my question could be more specifically put as, has anyone had experience with differing construction methods for idle tensioners between Volvo parts and aftermarket parts?

I just wanted to put it out there (before I send it back) in case someone else has been in this situation and knows that the part will or will not work, and why.

(The kit I bought is for the 2.4l turbo, not the 2.4 or the 2.3l turbo)

((Also, having bought this wagon used last year, I wouldn't be surprised if the tensioner presently in it is an old incorrect replacement.))

I would take the old one off and see if the pulley sits in the same place as the original part. If you can tell, put the new one on and see if the belt sits right.

What would concern me is even if the tensioner fits and works, would the belt they sent you fit? Check part numbers thoroughly to make sure these will work on your car. Where did you buy the kit from? I looked up the part number for the Contitech and it appears to be sold on eBay. I did not see your car in the description of what it will fit...even going through the year and models...'03 and '04 fit but XC70 for '02 is excluded. In regards to the tensioner- it appears to be by INA which is fine, but your model/year is also excluded in the list of P2 Volvo's in this list: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... er-99-plus At this point, I'm confused though because when I put your car in for FCPeuro- the belt kit for '03 and newer comes up. If I put it in for '01- the same thing happens. I cannot find the kit for your car- crazy!! Btw- INA changed some tensioners (same part numbers) from bolt to star shape so that in and of itself should not be a deterrent. I would probably call FCPEuro and ask them. If they have wrong info on their website they'll change/update it and they won't steer you wrong.

It will work. I have both types in my P2 wagons, exchange them freely between cars when the next one has the pulley bearing failed.

Thank you for your replies! Here they are next to each other. Going to try it on for fit. I bought it from rockauto, but other sites all came up with the same contitech kit for my year.

The belts seem to be the same length to me, within a cm or two at least. Not sure if an old belt stretching a cm is common?

The new belt was definitely too short. Luckily my old belt was only from last August, when I blew my a main seal and oil spewed all over everything.

The tensioner seems to fit fine, and work fine. It didn't fix the problem rattle noise (local garage told me it was the AC system, and the tensioner went because of it).

AC works fine, tensioner not the cause of it, so still not sure what the noise is. It's like a sporadic rattle like something metal is loose, definitely not rhythmic. Mostly the noise is during idle, and not nearly as bad when in park.

I'm begining to think it may be a heat shield or something. I have to replace my lower engine mount (torque mount?) And probably have a shop replace my high pressure power steering line, so maybe somewhere in there the source of the mystery noise will be found.

Could be a worn VVT hub or clogged VVT solenoid. Also your PCV is clogged unless you replaced it completely same time you had the seal replaced.
