upgrade spark plug wires?

Post by kippster41493 »

I'm getting a pretty decent misfire with replaced when bought the car cap and rotor, recently done spark plugs, and old wires (not sure of brand.) I see a lot of people recommend the Bougicord brand, if for kicks and giggles I upgraded the ignition coil to the MSD would these wires stand up fine to that or should I go with a set of "performance" plug wires? just out of curiosity for now :)

The only wires you want are original Bougicord.
They seem to be the only ones that do not cause issues.
Original Bosch cap and rotor.

MSD is ok, but unless you are at 300hp or above, the original Bosch is fine.

Ok, was just a hypothetical that popped in my head from reading other threads and was curious. Thanks for the info!

The factory setup for 1993-1998 single ignition coil is very good:
- Spark Plug
- Bosch Cap/Rotor
- Bougicord
- Bosch Ignition Coil

I don't understand all these "upgrade" to better ignition cord, ignition coil.
These "upgrade" will not make the car run any faster or more powerful.

That's not strictly true... better spark can make a real difference, especially (like Ben850 also remarked) when the goal is 300 hp and up. While the Bougicords will easily handle it, an upgraded coil can deliver a better stability under those kinds of demands. But, again, +1 to Ben850's statement - there's no need for it unless the goal is high HPs.

Which is understandable, it won't add a ton of power, but it will definitely be able to handle the 300+ HP Which I don't have now, will be in the future once the underbody parts/ chassis parts stop breaking :( Again this post was to pick peoples brains not start a war over stock/ aftermarket because everyone's preference is different on what they do to their cars :)

Only reason to go to something 'better' or 'different' for a stock or lightly modified Volvo in this situation would be to address aesthetics imo.

The war will end quickly when performance/300 HP stuff moves to the Performance Forum.

I was having misfire issues with my 98 S70 T5 when under heavy load and it turns out I had a bad boot on one of my cables. I went with the 8mm IPD cables, installed Volvo spark plugs and replaced the cap and rotor with Bosch parts and haven't had a problem since. These cars are very picky when it comes to plugs and wires.
