98 S70, Subframe bushing part number question...

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey all,
I'm going to order some subframe bushings. I know not to get URO under any circumstance (I really wish eEuroparts understood our aversion to their parts...) so I'm looking at the Pro Parts Sweden. (I know, I know, I know...) Price difference is substantial: $30 vs $130... Aside from getting the OEM Volvo ones, for which there is only one part number for all four subframe bushings (Volvo-3507923), does anyone know why there are two different ones that need to be ordered if going a non-OEM route? I found somewhere that the Volvo mount was updated at some point (which is why the hole is round instead of oval on the OEM ones?), but I can't seem to find that anywhere so maybe I am making that up. Am I missing something here? It would seem that installing the one with nubs all around would be better for the car, no? (Especially if that's the updated design...)

from FCP's site:
fits Front LEFT

fits Rear LEFT; Rear RIGHT; front RIGHT

And the OEM Volvo one looks a lot like the latter of these two:

(complete with nubs!)

Has anyone tried to install the bushings with nubs all around?

I used four 8678497 on my 850 and they fit and worked prefect.

Pro Parts Sweden is ScanTech... poor quality.

Trust me, you'd only want to do this job once.

Oh wow, I didn't know that we could put the XC90 piece into our cars. Thanks for that headsup. I have read through the write ups. Doesn't seem too hard, except that it requires determination and a whole lot of effort, especially if you're doing it on your back, in 90 degree heat... I am concerned about the "looseness" coming from the front of the car and of course, the dented washer. So I need to get on this. I don't want to go cheap. But I need to order new washers and the new plates (I dented them by placing my jack stands on them incorrectly.) Maybe I should just get the two front OEM ones? and wait a while to get to the rear ones?

Seems like Febi (Febi 22955) makes a part too... $28 at eEuroparts...

Rockauto has a Dorman (DORMAN 523138) 2004 XC90 subframe bushing for $20...

Dorman and Febi are much better brands than Proparts... right? I've always had luck with Dorman pieces. (Though, have never given them a go on our Volvo.)

Dorman owned ScanTech for a bit. ScanTech is Pro parts Sweden..

No personal experience with Febi..
But
Febi/Bilstein is a re-packager! Not a manufacturer of parts. They purchase OE & aftermarket parts & re-box them.

You can get parts made in China in a Febi box.

I find the bushings were hard to remove and I had the subframe out to do them.

Holy moly... (Looking at your picture, can't imagine dropping the subframe like that. I hope we have a garage by the time my wife wears out our clutch!)

Sigh. Why is it so hard to save a buck sometimes? Thanks for the insight. I always imagined that Dorman was like Moog with their rubber parts. I am going to think this over. I put in a Febi side engine mount and it was beefy and made in Germany. (But my Proparts upper torque engine bushing slides around in it's bracket.)

Just found another subframe bushing option...

Delrin Subframe Bushings... over at http://www.kaplhenke.com/products/awd-f ... e-bushings

Oh boy, do these look beautiful... has anyone tried these out? Is it me, or do they look like they'd be easier to install?

Proparts subframe bushings + poly inserts at FCP coming in at a little over $60... Has anyone gone the route of installing new proparts with poly inserts? Or would the poly inserts not even fit?

UPDATE:
Sigh, I ordered Proparts with the Proparts inserts. I'm thinking: double the Proparts, double the fun? :P

Also, can someone post the link for the subframe bushing tutorial? I can't find it. Thanks.

Hey guys, sorry to bump this thread, should be receiving parts tomorrow and want to tackle these.

- Can I do this job with the car on ramps? I know jackstands are ideal for everything, but I'm an idiot and bent my subframe bushings plates by putting my jackstand on them way back. And being that I'm going to replace those pieces. I'm guessing I either have to put the jackstand at the pinchweld or somewhere else... (Where, I do not know!)

- I can't for the life of me find the subframe bushings tutorial. I know I saw it somewhere because I remember distinctly a picture of a screwdriver handle being stuck in between the subframe and the frame. (For what reason, I do not know.) If someone could post a link to it, it would be greatly appreciated.

- I have a floor jack and two scissor jacks, and I don't get under the car without all my jacks anymore so I know how to be safe. What should I expect as I take the subframe bolts loose? Do I keep all parts of the subframe supported by the jacks as I remove the screws?

- I ordered that Motul synthetic grease from FCP. Can I slather that all over the bushing as I press it in? Or is that not needed?

Thanks! Wish me luck!

Ramps? Hell no!
Scissor jacks? HELL NO!

I strongly suggest you leave this job up to the professional if that is your plan of action. The likely hood of you being crushed by the car is high.

Aw man, where's the support! I think I wrote what I was trying to say incorrectly: I always get under the car with jackstands and I make sure that I have my floor jack and my scissor jacks nearby, just to be on the safe side. I don't go under the car with just jacks supporting the car.

This is one of the writeups I was looking for! http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/topic/13 ... placement/

He does it with the car on the ground... I have those wooden ramps built out of 2x12s that I saw described on here. Was wondering if I could use one of those to give me more clearance.
