Is the 240 auto tranny the same as toyota A43D

Post by pete c »

My 86 toy pickup with auto tranny has a bad OD solenoid. I have erad that this tranny is used by the 240 and many other volvos. I can't find the toy OD solenoid anywhere other than a 200+ dollar toy part, but, ebay lists this solenoid for the volvo at 70 bucks. It looks absolutely identical in the picture. The ebay seller says that it is volvo only, though.

what do you folks say?

thanks,

pete

it's the same. when you remove the old one be very careful that you don't get dirt in the valve body where you remove the old one you will create more problems than you solve. also the 2 orings have to still be somewhat soft or it will leak like a seive

thank you very much ken.

I contacted two different companies that are peddling these things on ebay and both said, "huh? never heard that. nope, won't work. this is a volvo only part." you might think they'd actually want to expand there customer base by, ohhh, maybe about a bazillion percent.

one other thing. when I removed it, I didn't take care to remove all the gunk. I suspect a bit may have gotten in. I plan on droppingthe pan and changing the filter and fluid this week. Is there anything else I can do while I am in there to clean out anything that might have gotten through? Or would I just risk goofing up something else? And, is synthetic fluid worth the extra $$$$

thanks again. you have saved me quite a few bucks.

i also heard you can use a dremel tool to cut a gro0ve across where the OD solenoid goes into the tranny housing. This way you always send a flow of tranny fluid to the system to keep it in permanent overdrive and bypass the solenoid altogether!

that is my current problem. the solenoid valve failed open, not closed. On a volvo or toy pickup or anything else NOT dragging a house behind it, this is a non issue. But, according to many experienced toyhouse owners I have spoken with, 3 things are a must if you are going to drive in hilly areas, or even into a stiff headwind.

These three things are an external cooler, a tranny temp gauge and a functioning OD bypass switch. This tranny does not have a locking converter, therefore when in OD things get a bit warm inside. Shifting to 3rd gear helps this situation quite a bit.

thanks again for your help. You volvo folks aren't nearly as snobby as I thought you might be! I read a thread at another volvo site where a potential volvo buyer had a meltdown after his questions went unasked for a short period.

btw, if anyone would like to have my always on OD solenoid, you can have it for nothing. Consider it a thank you for your help.

I dont think you will find a friendlier group of addicts than Volvo owners...now if you want to see snobs..try BMW! Joking ofcourse.. nice to see the auto fraternity alive and well!

email me at carvlvo AT hotmail COM if your looking for a home for that solenoid! I have an owner in Maine looking for that to do some tests on it.

Thanks!
