Replacing rear carpet panels with wood?

HI There proud Volvo enthusiasts. Has anyone thought of or actually replaced rear carpet panels with something other than junkyard replacements...

I see no benefit with the carpet back there; I take my trash to my local dumpster; I think I'll get another trash juice spill...

I kind of use my 850 like a cramped pick up truck with a cap; over 8 ft lumber slides out the front windows, hell, I might as well just load the back up with the stay-mat I need to help level my driveway in preparation for my first vehicle jacking... I'm feeling paranoid at the moment but that is another story...

How cool would it be to load gravel right in to a rear 850 cubical... I guess the sides (curved carpeting) would be difficult. But not to remove who needs them. You can't tell me sound deadening is going on much behind the backseats?

You could probably tear up the carpet that's there. Those panels are made of wood anyway. As for the sides, I couldn't tell ya what to do.

Dude...

"Versatile" doesn't mean pickup versatile.
It's a station wagon - If you need a truck, get a truck.
It seems like a crying shame that it's thrashed like that.
If a truck is out of the question for you, at least
line it with a tarp when you haul trash.

In the 240 days, Volvo used to sell a canvas waterproof liner that you could fit in the rear of a wagon. I think I even still have a brand new one in my garage some where that has followed me around for 30+ years. Great idea as it clipped into the trunk area to prevent messes like that. You can also get the plastic trays with raise (maybe 1-1.5") liners for wagons. I have picked a couple up at PnP. You could line the trunk area with a tarp covered by the plastic liner wit a flap at the rear to fold up when moving and drop down to protect the bumper when loading/un-loading.

I live in a city, but still do garden and other building material trash runs in my car and it still is good.

No - Just the sub-arctic.

I'm not trying to be harsh, I just don't cut my 2x4's with a screwdriver.
This is a Volvo wagon we're talking about here, not a trash hauler.
My solution is an old pickup that gets used for stuff like that.
The wagon is my Swedish DD "Lux-O-ride"!

Respect the Wagon - Treat it right!
Tarps go on sale all the time.
Wrap that rascal. Just saying'...
