2001 V70 XC AWD Engine Cranks No Start

Post by Zahn1138 »

Hey all,

The car is a 2001 Volvo V70 XC AWD with 170,000 miles

I've googled this to death. My symptoms are:
  • Hard start for one week - I had attributed to the cold.
One day, engine cranks, no start.
Intermittent sputtering as if the engine is about to catch, but doesn't.
I've read that it's either compression, fuel, or spark. I borrowed a fuel pressure gauge from AutoZone and it read over 50 PSI at the rail, so I don't think it's the fuel pump. I swapped out the fuel filter and starter because it's so high in mileage and they'd never been replaced. Same situation. I swapped out the crankshaft position sensor, no change. I've read that it can be the fuel injector relay, but after googling and looking at the fusebox diagram, I still have no idea which relay is the fuel injector relay.

Thanks in advance.

Stop...don't throw more parts at it until you've diagnosed it properly! The fuel pressure is dead on; if you can confirm you are getting spark, it sounds more like compression. Do a compression test and maybe check the timing?

Thought I'd throw in an update.

Compression was low, turned out that one spark plug well was filled with oil (likely spill from filling the engine).

The tensionser on the timing belt was loose and it may have skipped a tooth. Spark plugs were original at 150,000 miles, and needed to be swapped.

Battery was also on its last legs and the alternator was on its last legs at 150,000 miles.

So it was figured out.

Did you replace the starter, alternator, and everything? I'm having almost the same issue.....

Does anyone know where the fuel injector relay is in the v70, I'm having trouble finding it and Volvo has blocked all the sites that I can find links to for finding it.
