I agree. But then the base model costs a little bit more with the beefier turbo axle, and is no longer so much a base model ... they were putting together cars for the new car market, not for the pushing-20-years-old-let's-hope-the-enthusiasts-will-still-keep-them-running one.polskamafia mjl wrote:The only way this makes sense is if they use the turbo axles on all models.cn90 wrote:In retrospect, Volvo should have used the same axle for all models (N/A, GLT, T5), it makes more simple for everyone.

Well...they should have had more foresight then.erikv11 wrote:they were putting together cars for the new car market, not for the pushing-20-years-old-let's-hope-the-enthusiasts-will-still-keep-them-running one.

Actually you guys bring up a great point. Simplifying ones inventory is something that companies are shifting toward these days and something that the 'new' Volvo is doing. All cars coming out soon will have the same 4-cyl super/turbo engine, all will have the same base (but expandable) frame, etc. It's actually something I look for in buying a used car, it has to have been produced in decent numbers and has to have some commonality with other models in most major parts. This ensures a constant supply of inexpensive aftermarket support.
I'm looking at 'upgrading' my '95 and looking at a 2005-2007 V70. These cars share most parts with the 2001-2004 models as well. This gives it a seven year run for parts. Lots of used parts on the market vs our 3 year 95-97 850's. Although I'm still not sold on another V70, I really, really want that 2017 XC90...

Here are some prices.
Retailmenot.com offers 30% off $50 for AAP.
That makes their most expensive CAR QUEST brand $56.70. Now go to GiftCardGranny.com. A $53.49 gift card is $45.73, or around another 15% savings.
This axle would cost you around $49+tax. The only reason I bought the GSP and not the CarQuest is because the GSP was in stock locally and I needed the car back up and running the next day.
One at Autozone, Duralast Gold, for $78. GiftcardGranny.com selling a $76.91 giftcard for $56.91. So around $58+tax. Not bad!

I rebuilt my original Volvo axles with bearings and boots, grease etc from Skandix in Germany. The bearings are EUR 100 so around $110 each. So not so cheap, but at least peace of mind about keeping the originals and, hopefully, decent quality bearings. Plus it´s satisfying to know you did the work yourself.
