Motor/transmission mounts
Vehicle is a 2000 S70 non-turbo, 85,000 miles. I have replaced two engine mounts--the one on top and the right lower one (well, the mechanic did). I still have loud idle noise and vibration. How many other mounts are there and where are they located? Thanks.

The 3rd mount, the trans mount, (only 3 on a Volvo) rarely goes bad, I would look in other areas.
If you replaced the top and the lower that should secure it really well.
Please describe your "noises" better.
Have you installed new plugs at all? At that mileage a stage 0 is the first thing to do, making sure that everything is to new condition, then go search out the vibration. Tune up 1st!
If you are having persistent problems, you ahould think about seeking legal help. The site I use for my volvo is http://www.volvoproblems.com. They really helped me out a lot with my S 60.
This vehicle has the same symptom that I have seen others mention on this and other websites. First of all, plugs are new, air and fuel filter, oil changes up-to-date. I recently cleaned the throttle body--engine seems a little smoother, but didn't solve the problem.
When idling in Drive, the car starts a very low-pitched loud (at times) noise with a mild vibration. This stops within a second of releasing the brake pedal. Putting the gear into Neutral also stops the noise. The other noise is difficult to describe, not as low pitched and seems to come from the floorboard where the central console is. This occurs with launching for about a second or two. And, it occurs with every launch from a standstill. Replacing the upper and right lower mounts didn't solve the problem. Dealer says they really can't find any problem; my indy mechanic says all Volvos do this (!) This bugs me more than my wife (her car). I'm still suspicious about the engine-transmission mount.
Oh, it has been going on for years, but gradually getting louder and more annoying. It's a bit uncivilized for a car of this expense.
Thank you for your input.

There are five mounts.. one is the torque mount for the tranny and the top vibration damper. Which part of the mount did you replace.
The ones you should look on the diagram are 4, 9, 24a / 21, 14, 29.
You might want to check 37, 33 and 34 just in case.

This is NOT true.
There are THREE (3) engine mounts, two lower and the upper torque mount.
There are other bushings all throughout but they atr NOT engine mounts.
I suppose you should go and replace that last mount.
If that doesn't solve it start looking at subframe bushings, yes they can go bad with time and just about every other area where there is a bushing that connects to the drivetrain in one way or the other

Glad it could help.
If you really want to get technical.. volvo says this is part of the engine mounting system.
The 3 bottom ones part of mounting system (not the one with the transmission) are actually known as PADS and the tranny and the upper mount as most people call it are called RODS and ARMS with their respective bushings.
But...then again im not here to impress... call it as you like it... as long as its helpful!
Happy repairs ... forever!
