2001 Volvo V70T5 Battery depleting, alternator just rebuilt

Post by Erics2001VolvoV70 »

I just bought a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 with about 78k miles. After putting 30-40 trouble free miles on it, it then started losing battery power and died within 5 minutes while I was driving it. Just before it died, it posted several messages regarding the Electrical System, STC, and one other I don't recall. I got it parked, pulled the battery, had Autozone recharge and test it, and it tested fine, although it was depleted when I brought it to them for testing. I put it back in the car, it started up fine, and I drove it home about 5 miles. There was only one message this time status El. Power System Service Required. As I pulled into my driveway, it stopped responding to the accelerator even though it was idling around 1000rpm. Then it died, and the starter just clicked like the battery was dead again. After putting it on a trickle charge, there are 2 messages now, and the Battery and Generator warning light is still on. The second message says Immobilizer See Manual. There are no codes showing on the OBDII, but there are 4 Incomplete and 3 Ready Inspection/Monitor messages. The Incomplete messages are Catalyst, Evap, 02 Snsr, and 02 Htr. the Ready messages are Misfire, Fuel, and Comp. Does anyone have any suggestions about where I should start? Pull the alternator and have it checked again, or something else? The previous owner told me they just had the alternator rebuilt by a reputable shop and installed a new battery. Thanks for any help!

One way is to recharge battery with the ground diconnected. When GND is reconnected there is a spark at the terminal, or just measure the draw. Pull the fuse for the alternator and see if there is still a draw from the battery. Basically keep pulling fuses until the draw stops. Thats where your short will be. Careful with the sparks....

I took the car to Autozone and had them check the alternator on the car. It was only pushing out about 11 volts. I bought a new one, replaced it, and it seems to be working fine now. All of the battery and electrical messages are gone and I've driven it a few miles with no issues.
