My 2004 XC70 has almost 200,000 miles and recently, when I brake to come to a complete stop, just immediately before stopping, I feel a jerk, slightly worse if it is a hard stop. I have spent a lot of money replacing front struts, ball joints, engine mounts etc. on the advice of the mechanic with no change and had a complete brake assessment with no problems identified and no answers. The only comment was that the steering rack is slightly worn. I am wondering if it is something in the transmission? The transmission oil is clean. I do a lot of driving so I am concerned that this is something serious that can leave me stranded or even cause an accident.

Could be a worn valve body.

Try bumping it into neutral and then make a stop to see if the jerk remains. I think that should tell you if its transmission related.

First change out the transmission fluid and see how it is after a couple of hundred miles of driving.
No improvement? Then you need to rebuild the transmission valvebody.
Do it now, rather than later after more internal damage may boccur.
