I had this sound:

Turned out to be a lifter that had no oil.

Thats a hydraulic tappet lifter noise , best bet is to put a large screwdriver on the cam cover and the other end to your ear see if you can work out which cam then how many are knackered, just done this with my engine as it was having a teardown, and i lost x3 lifters due to oil starvation, when you take them out put them all in oil in individual labeled pots , then you can check them individually and see which ones are fubared ....

Dead sure the timing marks are right. Is it very hard to change the lifters?
