Swapping out alarm lock control module

Post by harryhendo »

I'm resurrecting a 2000 S70 SE, manual transmission, 247,000 miles. The car sat in someone's driveway for three years in the sun without moving, and a lot of plastic bits had to be replaced.

The window switches did not work, and neither did the lock button on the driver's door lock/power window switch nor the trunk lid or fuel door releases, so I suspected that the white "alarm lock control module" that is under the steering wheel kick panel, up just behind the headlight switch was failed. I swapped in a module from a scrap '98 S70, and the lock button and window switches now work properly. However, the key fob will not work, so I have to unlock the doors with the key.

In addition, when using the key, sometimes the alarm comes on, and I have to disconnect the scrap module to silence it.

I'm suspecting that the '98 module is not compatible with a 2000 S70, and so I have ordered a "new" module from a 2000 S70 off of Ebay.

The question is, will the "new" module from the 2000 S70 just work, or will it have to be "mated" or "programmed" to the car to make everything work like it came from the factory (all switches, key fob, trunk and fuel door releases, etc.) and NOT set of the dang alarm?

Thanks!!!

Several years ago I swapped out that module on the Nephews 2000 V70XC. It was plug and play. The module came from a 2000 V70XC.

The '98 and '99+ systems are very different but I'm not sure which module you are asking about. The remote receiver is located above the speedometer and the key code reader is located next to the steering column, behind the lower dash panel. There is no key code reader on a '98 model so that module wouldn't even be there.

If the alarm goes off and the car will sometimes not start when you use the key in the ignition then there is a chance that the antenna connector to the key code reader module is dirty. I have successfully used electrical contact cleaner to cure ills with that connection. There is also a connector on the antenna ring around the ignition key on the steering column and it too has a connector that can also get dirty.

The remote module and the key code module are programmed modules and they cannot be swapped between cars without a software download and even then they may not reprogram since the original numbers are not printed on them. The security system on the 99+ cars is a real PITA to deal with since all of the modules, including the ECU, are married in software.

Great. Thanks for your replies. The module I am talking about is about 5 inches long, about 3 inches tall, and about an inch wide, is white plastic, has two green wiring connectors, and it mounts with tabs to a metal plate next to a set of yellow wiring harness connectors, to the left of the steering column. I did find the remote receiver on top of the instrument cluster when I replaced bulbs there. Thanks.

I hope the new module, which is from a 2000, will work, because, as you say, the 98 and 99/00 models are very different, so I'm thinking that by using a '98 module, I've confused the electrical underworld and the gremlins are appearing. I'll post again when the new module comes in.
