98 S70 A/C clutch

Post by john200981 »

The clutch on my A/C is about ready to let go....will work for an indefinate period, then air will get warm... I can turn A/C on then off right away and it will work again.....anyway..... how big a pain in the a** is it to remove and replace the clutch off of the compressor without removing the whole unit from the car? OR, is it even possible?

From what I understand I don't think it's possible, you need to replace the compressor.
If you were able to send it out to someone to just R&R the clutch, (if possible) the labor would get to the point that you may as well just replace the compressor.

yes.. real pain to get to it. Even if you could replace the clutch assembly you need to remove the unit anyway.

Cross your fingers its not going to be hot and humid

This problem is often related to the shimming on the clutch and is not a bad clutch at all. Here is a good writeup in checking and reshimming the clutch which can be done without completely removing the compressor or evacuating the system.

Its worth a try.

Hi,
Just did the clutch shim adjust to my '94 855t w/250k miles. It has worked like a charm so far. My local Volvo shop said the clutch electromagnet is bad, but it turns out that the gap has exceeded the capacity of the magnet to pull it in when the engine is hot. Restoring the gap to app. .015 by removing a shim or 2 does the trick. Mine was .030-.040.

Good Luck

Thanks! How long did it take you to do this work? Have never tried taking anything like this apart before....especially from below!
