Squeeky Clutch engage sound

Post by kaneelschep »

Hi all.

I have a whiny sound seemingly coming from the enginebay passengerside, which directly relates to engaging the clutch in first gear.
It seems the longer you let it slip, the longer and whynier the sound is. but if you are gentle and slow it wont make any sound.
It could also be interpreted as a tiny belt slip sound/feeling.

The clutch is not slipping or anything like that.
it is overall a bit tired and defenitely not new, but I have no reference to a new clutch anyway and I dealt with that in many a car for hundred thousands of kms.
I am just a bit worried it will crap out suddenly. Wich is the moment my girl drives it probably. ;)

I recently rebuild all my brake calipers and basicly pumped 1,5 liter of brand new brake fluid through the whole system.
Because of the light we had a really hard time seeing if there was enough fluid in the reservoir all the time. But i really tried to keep it as full as possible.

Could the two be somehow connected? Since the clutch fluid comes from there too.
Maybe it means air in the system? needs bleeding somewhere?
Or maybe a second time bleeding the calipers allover in a right order?

The brakes are a world of difference btw. Not even a 100 euro for all new parts. Few hours work at home in the vice and done.

Thanks!

Are you willing to change the clutch if that will fix the noise?

But to answer the question; no, i would not. ;)
Still I would like to know more about why you ask that.
It seems quite random to me.

My comment is based on what you said.

If you are not will to take the transmission out to inspect the clutch and transmission. Just leave the noise be.

I searched around and found some other posts describing the same issue.
https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/vie ... hp?t=42429
https://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/12 ... _gear.html
http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=17077
They see it as a chirp, fan belt slipping sound, squeek, whine. It all fits.
Most point to the release bearing.
There are also people who changed the clutch and still had it. But they also say they so not know if the bearing was replaced.
Here is one who also sais the clutch master and slave cilinder need to be blead after doing the brakes.

Too bad there are no real definitife soltion on those topics ;)

This sound did only start after I did all the breaks.
So that seems like a too big coincidence.
It did leak out quite some fluid from the back, since I could only get the pipes loose at the Y where the pipes split for left/right. Not at the caliper itself.

Now I am reading about the master and slave clutch cilinder.
Maybe I should bleed them just to be safe.
And just bleed all the brakes again.

What is the bleeding order again?
I thought right left back. right left front.

And is there a smart way to bleed the slave cilinder?

Thanks!

didnt report back.
I blead all the brakes again. changed the back pads for the yearly test. It braked like new on the test bank.
No problem with the clutch. Even though its old. Clutch didnt change any in the last 8000km since I wrote the above.
It was the power steering pump that whined. It became more evident in the last few months.
Probably needs a rebuild or swap.
