Good Morning All,
I have a 2004 xc90 with about 135,000 miles. My check engine light came on and I checked the codes quickly and found that the ECM DTC seems to be the culpret. I am an AVERAGE mechanic at best but I am wondering does this typically mean the entire ECM module needs to be replaced or is this normally something else. I am guessing the answer is that it could be anything and I should have a proper mechanic look at it. I am just trying to get more information before I go in. Any suggestions/thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks!
Joe

ECM DTC is broad enough to warranty a separate topic on it's own but the first thing you might try is to get any reasonable OBD reader on the car and see if it reports a more specific (like a P-something) code. Then you can try and correlate that code to a Volvo code via another thread like http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread ... rsion-List (not my link, just passing on, may not be 100% accurate but close enough).
To read the Volvo code you need a DICE and VIDA (can look "VIDA/DICE" up if you want, lot of info for what it does) although I am aware of other more advanced OBD readers that can display these as well.
Good luck!

As you can tell from my sig, ECU problems are rarer than henways teeth.
Most ECM fault codes refer to a component fault detected by the ECU, Not an actual ECU problem
