Hello.
First time Volvo owner,bought an 1997 850 T5 wagon for a steal (900usd)
It was running fine until yesterday when the local weather took a turn for single digits overnight.
Went to go out yesterday morning and it would turn over and crank, but not start. The previous owner put a so-so battery in it to begin with,so I bought a brand new battery. Went to start the wagon, and I get nothing, not even any cranking. The lights, radio and everything else works.
I can even hear the fan whirring in the engine bay.
So what gives? Did I somehow burn out the starter?
One thing I need to mention is that when I tried to start the car before on the bad battery, the emergency hazard lights came on of its own, then eventually they turned after a few minutes even this happens after I put in the new battery.
Thanks in advance!!!

Maybe ignition switch, see what others have to say. Always something to think about when there is weirdness on starting attempts. You can always try direct current to starter and see what response you get on that front.

A faulty cam positioning sensor will lead to a no start situation as well.

Lock and un-lock the driver's door lock using the key a couple of times and then try again.
This re-sets the immobiliser.

Thanks to those who replied and gave me possible answers to my questions...rguzz and 850 LPT!
Evidently unknowingly I did what Neil (scot850) recommended and it seems like the problem is solved...
I'll also look into the replacement of the FP relay as suggested by beigg as well.
Who would have known?
Not this newb....LOL!!!

The non-start issue when the hazard lights come on when the battery is re-connected seems to confuse the immobiliser system. Only way to re-set it is to re-set the immobiliser system using the lock/un-lock with the ignition key. I had the same issue with a 97 850 I was working on as a project. Car is still running 3000 miles later. Always handy to have the spare FP relay in the glove box and a torx wrench of the right size to take the fuse box cover off to access the FP relay.
