External temp sensor question?

On my 2000 'R' occasionally I get what looks like a message of 'dISC' when it is left in the external temperature setting. Turning it to a different setting or restarting the car will normally have the message return to normal. Any ideas? I probably have other external temp sensors kicking around in the garage to swap in if that is the issue.

As far as I know, it's actually the switch itself that's gummed up. I had that happen to me a lot when I first got my car. I rotated it back and forth quickly like 50 times and I haven't seen it in years.

I harvested the entire dash on the 99 so I have a used switch if needed

Ok, are you pulling my leg? I'm talking about the LCD display on the speedo housing and not the display on the head unit?!
