Super easy ECT removal 3 minutes

Post by Jeff Schubert »

This was done on a 1989 740gl

Step 1 Disconnect Battery
Step 2 Remove connector from ECT
Step 3 Remove connector from Knock Sensor
Step 4 Grind small corner off 3/4 wrench
Step 5 Remove ECT sensor

Done

It took me longer to type this than it did to remove the sensor....

Remove the intake manifold?!

Um..a socket won't even fit over the plastic connector?

I had done research on this and thought it was going to be a cursing, tool throwing, bloody knuckled nightmare...

Seriously...less than 5 minutes. Cake.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

A deep well socket will fit over the plastic connector. A 3/4 inch or 19 mm deep socket, 4 inch long extension, and a 3/8 inch ratchet will fit under the intake manifold.

Maybe my plug is aftermarket but I couldn't get a socket to fit. The connector is in the way of the flats.

If so that should be within spec?

That connector looks odd.

On one side says Volvo 1362645

The other says SWF Germany 601 607

The plastic plug part is wider than 3/4, maybe 13/16ths.

I just had it in the freezer for about 30 minutes and it seemed to level out at what I believe is 14100 Ohms.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this sensor. I have yet to test 'boil' it, but room temperature around 3950 ohms and 'frozen' around 14000 ohms, don't think its necessary.

Next test...blah still chasing problems...

Could the connector be slightly rotated? the first time I replaced the sensor on my 1988 760 Turbo the connector was coming loose due to corrosion.

No, seems quite solid. Im no body builder but it seems it would take a lot of effort to turn it or break it.
