2006 xc90 v8 serpentine belt issue

Post by Cthomas44 »

The serpentine belt came off in the last few weeks. ThE Volvo mechanic told Us that the mounts on the engine had broken off and that he would use a smaller belt to bypass these mounts that keep the belt in place. He said in order to replace the mounts it would be a very expensive fix. Has anyone ever heard of this before.

Yes. One of the idler pulleys seizes up and it breaks the boss it mounts on off the timing chain cover.
New timing chain cover may be needed.

What keeps the belt in place is the tensioning force and the ribs (to a certain extent). Can you specify which part exactly broke? (was it the tensioner, one of the idlers, or did the A/C compressor seize)?

I have seen a reverse engineering quick fix like that where a smaller belt is installed, but you have to bypass the A/C compressor.
But that does not sound like an option here in Georgia :(
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
Disclaimer: We (very) seldom do that

This happened to our car yesterday. About to order the Timing Cover online ($300). Anyone know what Gaskets and other parts I am going to need for the job?

Does anyone know if there is a tutorial for the 2006 XC90 for the V8 engine... Serpentine belt removal and replacement? Have not found one yet.
Thanks

Song Huang, Thanks for the post. Halfway thru serpentine belt job. It is off but can't get the 10MM hex (allen wrench) inside the tensioner to budge. Need to replace that tensioner. It is incredibly tight area and the bolt also is incredibly tight and apepars it will need Hercules strength to open it. Just ordered this tool as it looks like it may do the trick. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007E ... UTF8&psc=1 but have to wait for Monday for arrival.

I will also try to fabricate an allen wrench into a short stubby one with a leverage pipe in the next day or two. So far far more difficult than the other Volvo's I have. At least there's no timing belt on this model :)

Fabricating the stubby allen wrench and leverage pipe was what is needed to remove tensioner. Used the amazon tool for install. Finished job tonight and will test drive tomorrow. very very tight area to work in. As volvo serpentine belts go... this was a tough one. Wonder what the service interval is??? Hope it is a long time before I need to do this again.

Job done all good. Just drove 100 miles on it. Idler bearings were definitely shot. They felt like sand was in with bearings. Not smooth. Not a horrible job just need a few special tools and patience and know the space is crazy tight where the belt goes so it is tight squeeze to put new belt on.
