Which motor mounts are easy to replace

Post by Clemens »

My wife just told me that I either buy parts for my 96 R before the year ends or or pay more taxes. So I thought I´d replace the motor mounts. Which ones are easy to replace, which ones are tough? I did the upper torque mount a while back (what a bitch), but I guess the rest is probably not in really dandy condition either. I think one of the round ones was super tough to replace, right?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I recently replaced all of the mounts and it made a huge difference in the way the car behaved. I thought the right front under the crank, the lower transmission, and upper mount were a cake walk. Very easy and took a short time to do. However the HMM's (round mounts front and rear) were fairly challenging. It took several jacks, pry bars and various "colorful metaphors" to remove and install.

I removed all the mounts and installed the HMM's first since I really needed to raise the engine quite high for the install. Then I installed all the easy ones. Took me about 5-6 hours end to end. Well worth the effort since I'm in the middle of a stage 0 refresh.

i'm as well on the never ending road to stage 0, and i really feel all of them are quite shot. Thanks for the input. I might end up buying all of them and let my indie do it or go for it by myself.

Here are a couple of thought for you...

1) When I did the front and rear lower mounts I found it necessary to remove the mounting bracket as well. I just could not get the engine raised high enough to get the mount out otherwise.

2) when you remove the lower rear motor mount by the firewall, the turbo coolant supply hose becomes very easy to access. I suggest replacing this hose while you have the rear mount out.

3) there are a total of 5 mounts counting the transmission mount. Replacing all 5 improves the driving experience significantly. There are diy write ups and videos on these jobs in this forum as well as videos from FCP on YouTube. These are all doable jobs.

Is your '96R 4WD? If so, the rear hydraulic MM will indeed be a bear. It's tough enough on my '98 T5. However, it's due if it's never been done.

@ sleddriver: the 96R is fwd only (thank god for that, one thing less to worry about). i just ordered all 4 (2 liquid filled balls, rubber bumper under the timing belt, long torque brace under the RMS). They are probably all shot and still readily available.

@charleskennedy23: thanks for the tip with the Turbo coolant return line. This has been on my list for a while now anyway. I´ll check out Roberts videos and attack in spring.

+1
Don't wait until spring!
It'll be a piece of cake with the rear mount out. Also, easy to replace the lower turbo hose if it hasn't already been done. If it's welded itself onto the long (25mm) metal ferule, scrape the bottom rubber off with a sharp wood chisel then peel the rest away.
