Where do I go from here, 2001 v70xc?

Post by Mr-walrus »

This is my son's car and Pops gets to use it. I worry about the transmission, etc. I want my own volvo. I'm not fussy, but I want AWD, some horsepower and a good average milage. No picky on model, price 7-10K. What do you guys think? All suggestions welcome. I'm 70, so impressing chicks, blah.

Spend 4k on the purchase for the volvo you're after, use 6k for repairs as they crop up.

Jim will have a nice P2 in your price bracket but you will need a trip to Philly to pick it up.

What do you mean WILL HAVE?
I DO have, (2006 with decent miles)
Please see classifieds, (here), you won't be sorry, she needs NOTHING.
Smack in the middle of your price range and I still got ya by 2 years (I'm 72 and every time I say that, I shudder)
Idaho? Sheesh!

Oh and a 2006 drives light years better than the best 2001 can. Better, quicker engine, better transmission, much better brakes, better steering feel, better suspension and so forth

I found a 2005 with 160K. Looks very good. Good leather. My concern is the transmission. I know Volvo had problems. BTW engine is B5254T2, AWD.
Price is 5,000. I haven't seen it in person.
Opinions?

Opinion number 237-45B:

Get the latest year you can find with the 2.5T. That will give plenty of get up and go, slightly better mpg than the 3.2, and you get the Haldex drive system. Lower miles on the clock DO matter as far as the condition of the rear drive system and front suspension components.

Volvos always look gorgeous. They have fit and finish of the worlds best cars. The look of a Volvo bears no relationship to the costs needed to bring it to daily driver condition.

The mechanical stuff requires you to inspect it thoroughly (4-5 hours) or pay a PPI (300-500 USD) to find out how it has been maintained.

ALL XCs have the same engines: 01-02, 2.4Ts... 03-07, 2.5Ts

That would be fine if EVERYTHING has been done to that one as mine and not 50K miles ago!!! (and the cosmetics are as good ... which I doubt)
All the work done on mine was done within the past 100 miles.

I'll say this again for the second time this week: "The cheapest Volvo you buy will wind up being the most expensive one you buy... in the long run"!

Oh, there is a relationship. It's inverse.
