But what thermostat did you use? You can order a replacement thermostat from ebay that will fit , but with the cost of it( not cheap) and shipping( the only ones I saw were from the UK) its as much as the whole housing here.

I ordered the Beck Arnley housing and thermostat from rock auto at about 1/2 the price of OEM and it was well made and works well.
Its good to know that I can replace just the thermostat next time. Are you sure that it fits though? The gasket can be made like frank 65 said.

I looked up the parts numbers you listed and I see they are the whole assembly also, not just the thermostat.

Not 100%. I almost had the chance in finding out, however, the volvo I was looking at that might've necessitated those parts ended up being sold before being notified upon arrival.

The assemblies I found were available for under $65.00.

If you make a one-time purchase for an older t-stat housing, say like from 2003 or '04, you can afterwards replace just the stat. Might have to finagle the top radiator hose because the older housing nozzle orientation is slightly different.

There was another thread on this very issue recently in which I posted some parts numbers and pictures. The other difference is that the older housing has three mounting bolt holes, but two of them line up exactly with your existing unit and the third one can be sealed off with something like JB-Weld, or even just left open because the gasket will keep it from leaking anyway.

Here is the thread link.... https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 83#p415783

I'm reviving this because I may be in for a new thermostat on our '07 S60 as well and replacing the entire housing is ludicrous! Stupid things that Volvo does- this is close to the top of my list (oh, and there are others). Anyone want to chime in...? Have you been able to just replace the thermostat itself? Also, these are listed at 90 degree housing units only. Is this our only choice?

Look at my post above yours. You can buy a used housing from the earlier version and then be able tore place just the thermostat itself. The real problem is that by the time you track down and purchase a good used housing, pay shipping, and then buy a new stat and requisite gaskets, you're going to spend almost the same amount of money as if you just bite the Volvo bullet and purchase a completely new stat and housing assembly for what you have. That's where I landed on this issue last summer on my daughter's '07 S60.

On the other hand, if you think you'll keep the car long enough to have to replace the stat one more time down the road (or if you'll be passing the vehicle onto a friend or family member), it might be worth the extra hassle of getting the old housing as discussed above.

MadeinJapan,

I just did my 2005 XC90 2.5T, which is identical to 2005-2006 S60.
I replaced both the tstat and the ECT WITHOUT removing the PS Pump.

Here is the DIY:

Can you take the capitalistic approach?

Buy the housing, thermostat and ECT and then sell your old ECT to recoup some geld?

I like the way you think...actually, today the S60 did much better with my suggestion not to turn the heat and fan on full blast in the cabin. We'll keep a watchful eye but now I know what I have to do if it comes down to it.
