Very nice topic!
My 850 had a lot of no start issues when |I just got it. You saved me a lot of times ;)

Like above 2 posters I say coolant sensor and and wires for the fuelrelay are very important ones.
When I had a no start. I would fumble the cables to the fuelpump relay, then it suddenly started like normal.
I replaced the loom with a used one.

The coolant sensor gave me a lot of no starts when I just bought the car. You stop for gas and never start it again. wait 10 minutes. It starts like normal.
Also makes the engine rev by itself and the temp gauge do strange things.
quite dangerous one actualy in a 200hp+ car.

Also: lawnmower syndrome. Start it cold and stop it within 5-10 seconds and it never starts again. Fuel is there. spark is there. still no go.
I had that twice before I found out what it was.
Pull fuelpump fuse, crank a few times, put fuse back and it will run like normal.

Fuel system is first on my list because it takes less than a minute to determine if the problem is in the fuel system. Most cars have a vacuum line somewhere on the air intake. Pull the vacuum line, inject two seconds of either into the air intake, one mississippi two mississippi, reconnect vacuum line. Try to start engine, if the engine fires on the either, the problem is in the fuel system, if it make no difference the problem is elsewhere.

I'll tell you what!

My started up with a jump, but continued to do crazy things, like the engine was would not idle correctly, putting it into gear and trying to accelerate was almost impossible, climate control lights were flashing, shift arrow flashing, it was all terrible!

Turned out, I had a bad alternator diode (after three previous alternator replacements - BOSCH skrewed me). Due to the subtle lack of power, the car reverted into "Limp mode", didn't have enough power to energize the climate control, etc.

Bottom Line:
My mom's old Mazda could start if you popped the clutch while coasting down a hill. Volvos love voltage, they need adequate power (electricity). Check that your charging system and battery is up to snuff!
