1998 S70 T5 - Can't find last bolt to remove PS bracket and Alternator

Post by SleeStak69 »

I need to replace the Alternator. It's 1998 S70 T5, so being a turbo, that means I've got even more lines and tubes in the way making this job extremely difficult. I've got every single bolt out that I need to but I absolutely cannot find the final bolt (longest?) that is suppose to be behind the alternator which I believe screws through a bracket holding the alternator. I watched the YouTube video (many times) by RobertDIY for replacing the alternator. He says at 8:14 that there is a "lower alternator bolt" and it's a "12mm"

Please help. I cannot see a 12mm bolt and I just purchased a longer ratchet wrench to help out and I still cannot find the bolt.

I recently posted a few videos of me tearing down an 850 sedan (Ghost). I'm pretty sure one of those videos shows all of the PS bracket & alternator bolts location.

As the video explains, it helps to raise the PS bracket assembly up and out of the way. If that lower bracket bolt is what you are referring to, the bolt screws into the bottom of the bracket. On the passenger side of the bracket you should be able to see the square shape that the bolt treads screw into.

As above, assuming it's same as P2. The a/c compressor lower bolts (below the compressor) must be slacked a little, for the compressor/alternator bracket to be loose enough to slide the alternator upwards. On my 2003 the two bolts in question were quite seized.

Got it done. I ended up having to remove the transmission coolant line and a power steering line to reach that damn bolt. All I have to do now is put the serpentine belt back on and fill up the coolant and Power steering. What a pain in the ass though.

Yeah, the alternators on these cars are buried well. It's a low maintenance part, to be fair, though.

1/4 inch ratchets and lots of wobbles are helpful

Do you mean the oil cooler line? Transmission cooler lines are on the left/driver's side of the radiator.
