Odometer stoped...not sure if it is a gear!

Hello folks.....i have a 96 850GLT. I discovered that my odometer stopped after i suspected it and I pressed the trip meter and reset it to zero's...it has not changed since....So are the gears still good since I was able to reset the trip meter? Or could they still be bad. I read another posting that said the ABS light can affect the odometer....mine comes on intermittently. ALSO...my speedometer doesn't work every once in a blue moon until I restart the engine....Ideas??

its either the sending unit from the tranny thats not sending a signal or the speeometer gear if both the speed and the odo are not working.

i would most likely take out the speedometer cluster and remove the backing to have a look at the gear.

I think Ozark Lee had a good write up on it somewhere.

Hi!

What is this story about ABS light triggering an odometer malfunction? Or is it the other way around? I bought the two odometer gears from Odometergears.com, and am about to find a Sunday afternoon to install them. But I also have the ABS light turn on every time I sit in traffic for a while... What does that have to do?

Please enlighten me!

Carvolvo....funny thing is that the speedometer works 99% of the time.....can you tell me more about the line from the tranny...is there something i can check for like a fuse, broken cable, etc before I take apart the dash w/o replacement gears? Vince, i did a search here on posts related to odometer failure and there was mention of a corelation with a faulty ABS...someone stated that they got a remanufactured one and "all problems went away" Seemed like he meant that the odometer problem went away as well.

im trying to understand the relationship with the speedo sending unit and the ABS.

The way I understand it is each wheel has a sensor. These sensors determing the wheel spin rate and send signals to the abs computer to tell when there is excessive wheel spin on the wheels for brakes or the traction control.

I would suggest you clean those sensors as they tend to accumulate road dirt and brake dust.

I forgot to have a look at what year your volvo is...but if it is a 93-95 you can actually use the on board diagnosis to find out whats wrong with your ABS.

The speed sensor for the speedometer is .. funny enough.. directly under the tranny.. under the brake fill reservoir. You can trace the wires under there.. one goes to the 02 sensor the other wraps around and goes to the sending unit.

The gears are toast. Don't feel bad, every Volvo VDO odometer either has failed or will fail. The reset to zero is past the actual tally gears and they never break. From the sounds of things you also have a failing ABS module since you have two of the symptoms, the ABS light and a speedometer that is intermittant. I see Victor in your future as well as odometergears.com.

It is the former, the Odometer/Instrument Panel can catch on fire and it won't bother the ABS module. But the ABS module going south will cause the speedometer/odometer to quit. The one that you notice most is the speedometer not working. The other thing that causes similar problems is the Vehicle Speed Sensor but it usually doesn't cause and ABS fault light.

Greetings All. A personal observation. This evening I replaced my ABS control on my 1996 850 (non-Turbo/Non-tracs) (thanks for the advice on another topic) and all seemed well.

On the way home I noticed the Speedometer and Odometer were not working. I haven't looked close enough yet, but could I have knocked something loose?

I would try cleaning the ABS connector with electrical contact spray and reseat it. It is either a bad connection to the module or a bad replacement ABS module itself.
