S70 loss of power

Post by hendrixscottie »

I have a 2000 Volvo S70 non turbo , driving through town yesterday it loss power and as I coasted to the side of the road cut off, the ETS light came on at this time. I checked the codes and got several that pointed towards the ETS but also the crankshaft sensor. I was showing signs of the ETS going out before like rpm unsteady when stopping but I was wandering if the ETS going out could cause the crankshaft codes to come on. The car will not start at all right now. Would the car start up if you sprayed starting fluid in the intake?

Give it a try with ether, that will definitively tell you if you have a spark/timing problem or a fuel problem

Clear all the codes, after you have written them down. These cars tend to generate a ton of codes when things go bad, many times half of them are spurious and don't point to trouble,

When I popped a turbo hose the other week, I got a turbo code as well as a ETS light - neither of which required attention.

I now have noticed that the drive belt has shredded only about half of it is left on the pulleys. Timing belt is still on and looks ok though.

When you say it won't start - do you mean it won't crank, or it won't fire and catch?
Do you smell fuel coming out the exhaust?

It turns over fine just won't crank and run. One of the codes was from the crankshaft sensor so I am going to replace it and go from there the car has over 300000 miles on it so it is due one anyhow. It did pop twice like it wanted to try to crank.

I would deal with that timing belt before it fires...its a $2000 bill if it breaks...

If the wiring insulation on the crank sensor has turned to goo and fallen off, causing the wires to short, it can cause this code.

Wait - is it the serpentine belt that is shredded and the timing belt is fine?

Thats less serious. The AC might be frozen up which can stop the engine but usually you will hear it firing.

It sounds like you have a ignition problem, perhaps check 12 VDC on the coils' supply

Timing belt is Ok the serpentine is shredded. Found out when looking real close the motor mount has broke and the front pulley cut into it that's what tore up the belt. Hopeing that the crank sensor gets it running again and I'll fix the mount and install a new belt
