Help on O2 sensor

Post by Jaguar xjs »

Ok folks, I'm 200 miles from home and the CE lit up. Forgot the code the guy at napa gave me but he said O2 sensor is slow to respond. Can I drive this home 200 miles or do I have to fix this today?

Is it front or rear o2?
If it's the front and not showing symptoms of running rich(black smoke from the exhaust),drive it and forget about o2 sensor.

If it obviously running rich then reset the code and drive it home.

Drive it home. You will probably need a new front O2 sensor, check around for a good price. The CE light is almost always due to emissions fault, just have to get it fixed before inspection.

Car started running really bad and black smoke. Had the front O2 sensor changed with a Bosch part. I hate paying people to do things I can do but sometimes you just have to. Thanks for the help!

You usually can get home by unplugging the MAF sensor in this case.

Glad you got it straight

Well this is disappointing. 50 miles from home the CE lights up. Pull into Advance and they pull the same code as yesterday. Front O2 sensor slow to respond. Going to try and figure out getting a warranty repair near my home. Now I'm not so sure a Bosch piece was fitted and they subbed an aftermarket but it seems to me even an aftermarket should last more than 150 miles. Not a happy camper today.

That's what i was afraid of.
What was the actual code?
It could be that you have a vacuum leak somewhere or an exhaust leak(like flexi pipe).
The other thing can be that they spliced the connector on new o2 sensor which these cars don't like at all.Only oem Bosch with direct fit connector.

Thanks for the reply Misha. Code pulled was P0133. Doing some reading I'm thinking a vacuum or exhaust leak. It appears the new front O2 sensor is a direct fit with no splicing. Will put the smoker on the intake side but I do think it it is an exhaust leak since the car has that exhaust leak sound. The previous owner did say he had a couple holes filled so I'm thinking there may be some random holes that need to be attended to.

Exhaust leak will ONLY affect front o2 sensor reading if it's between exhaust manifold and cat.
If the leak is between a cat and rear o2 it would affect rear o2 sensor reading.
Everything after rear o2 doesn't matter neither for front, neither for rear o2 sensor reading.

Flexi pipe is the weakest connection in there.
