I removed fouled plugs and cleaned with a spray that I had for electronic switches. Then lightly cleaned plugs with 1000 grit sandpaper. Also put a teaspoon of oil into each cylinder using a straw. It started OK. My friend, a Volvo savant, says that LMS is a myth.

Having experienced LMS myself on both Volvo and BMW, I concur that your friend is savant, although perhaps Not Volvo savant.

My VW has an even more interesting version. When the engine gets over fueled on cold start, it starts and Idles roughly with no power. The throttle is unresponsive ( no compression). After 30-45 seconds, with strong fuel smell from exhaust, it suddenly jumps to 1500 rpm then goes back to normal. It then drives fantastic.

A savant is someone over-the-top smart. My friend has been repairing Volvos for over 30 years.
You, on the other hand own a VW, which explains your case of lawnmower syndrome.

One of my Volvos has had LMS and the BMW had it two Thanksgivings ago. It's real, your friend just hasn't experienced it.

My P80 Volvos have had LMS three times. It's not a myth.

Should ask your friend if he puts oil on top of the pistons when rebuilding an engine before he puts the head on or before inserting spark plugs - and why he does. It isn't just to keep things from making metal to metal contact... Maybe this problem just hasn't been brought to his shop yet. He will eventually see it. A good mechanic knows almost anything is possible - while not everything is probable.

This problem isn't limited to Volvos or VWs - though it likely is seen most here. Since these engines last so long the piston ring gap changes over time so the ring compression on the cylinder wall decreases. Add that and dry rings and you now have this problem where everything can blow-by. You can also get it as a result of carbon build-up. Oil helps. That's part of the reason they do or should be squirting a little engine oil in during leak down or compression tests to see if it improves things...

Those that work on larger/heavier equipment know it exists. Not every mechanic will experience every possible engine issue permutation in their lifetime.

Our BMW got a wicked case two Thanksgivings ago. My poor wife thought she had detonated the engine because it cranked over at about 1000 rpm with all kinds of wheezing and popping noises. She had moved the car out of driveway to let someone out for the large family gathering.

30 years fixing Volvos? Congrats for making it to high school..... :-) now you can help him learn even more.

Oops I think there is a typo in your post, Paul! Probably you meant it to read "Respected Volvo help site Moderator tries, for the third time, to help explain a simple and well established truth."
