Magnet on a stick is an invaluable tool. Same for the mirror on a stick. Both of which I used when removing and reinstalling my ABS Module. I was just lucky to find where that 3mm hex socket landed in the mess of tubes, wires, and brackets after I dropped it.

Oh... and don't forget the 12mm ACE socket I found wedged in the front side intake port on number 4 cylinder when I was did my head gasket. Someone forgot to police their tools after working on the car, long before I got it.

If the crank is on spot, the cams can be turned ALL the way around.

So I got a bendable magnet on a stick that's strong enough to pick up a 3/8 drive ratchet but it didn't catch the bolt (i checked a matching bolt and it was magnetic). I've been working on this for 3 months and I'm getting fed up. My valves are probably bent and I dont think I have the energy to remove the manifolds and take out the valves again. Any idea how much this car scraps for? There's only one Volvo dealership in utah so maybe it would sell for parts?

Did you try a mirror on a stick? See if you can "see" the bolt before trying to fish it out with the magnet. And you have to recover that cam cover bolt, it's down in the turbo charger.

Michael, that bolt fell into the post -turbo part of the induction. I would think it's going to get blown into the intercooler and stay there. I can't see it getting stuck in the wastegate or anything like that.

I would go ahead and pull the cam cover and inspect the cams, as previously discussed. That's not going to be an issue if you later decide to sell the car for scrap or for somebody else to fix it. Obviously you're not going to get it running very soon, sorry about that. A head gasket is a super technical job to learn how to wrench on, don't be too frustrated. Taking your time is a good sign, it is too easy to mess it up if you rush it.

FYI many people leave the exhaust manifold in the car when they pull the head out. Since you've been in there once before, you could consider that method this time. Also, note that if the valves are bent, you will need a machine shop to fix that for you, by swapping in valves (another used head is the cheapest source for valves and a good way to go) or you could get another used head period. But first look at the cams and cam journals, that will tell you where to start.

Scrap value is about $250. If you part it out you can get more but that takes a lot of time while you wait for the vultures to find the carcass and pick what they need, and you need to have a place to keep it unless you just try to pull off everything you can.

Are you sure the missing bolt is actually inside the turbo, and didn't fall beside it or something? Take a break then come back and keep looking. :)

Ive got a loose turbo lying around and can have a look and see if I can give guidance on where that bolt went. I can't believe it went into the turbo if you haven't run the car since the drop. Im away until Friday, can check then.

I already pulled the cam cover, it was one of those bolts that fell into the hole. I'll make sure but when it happened i was pretty sure it went there and i was taking a bolt out that was right beside the hole. So the cams, there was a slight bit cut out in a line on the journals, looks like welding slag, i used a dremel to grind out any part that wasn't level but it was barely noticeable and only on one journal. I called around and the locals only want $60 to scrap it because its old. That kinda makes me think i have to fix it because getting $60 for my baby would legitimately make me want to snap someones neck. The biggest part of the job if i had to replace the valves is the cost and taking them out and putting them back in, the stupid 3 notches instead of one makes it take forever and i can barely do it myself and there isnt a lot of people here that I know to get someone to reach in and take out the retainers once I've got the spring compressed. So I just called a pull a part yard, $100 with tax for the head including the cams, $40 for another head gasket, $100 for the machine shop to resurface it and a hole junkload of time to take apart the head from pull a part and put it back into my engine after checking its valves and lapping them, and hoping the valves in that head are fine, that $240 is how much ive already spent.

Any thoughts on this, not all the tappets are up, even a few pairs that are for the same cylinder. In a set of 2, one is up (resisting force if i push on it) and the other is down, shouldnt both in a pair be in the same position?
