Idling problem 1998 C70 2.3L HPT 317000 miles

Post by Racerxc70 »

After I drive around for awhile maybe stop at a store then drive around then stop again stop at another store for 20 minutes or so then turn the engine on it idles rough until I drive away even a short distance the it idles normally, is it a bad idle control valve/ slide valve?
My mechanic did a fuel pressure check and and injector leak check the leak check was good but he said the spray was poor and also cleaned the idle control valve and replace a hose connected to it
The vacuum hoses are good
New mass flow sensor installed last year
Could it be the fuel pressure regulator, the problem is intermittent and there are no codes. The next time that it happens I will do nothing and see if it corrects itself or stalls out
Thank you

I replaced the Throttle position sensor and the Turbo intercooler intake hose, the sensor had a lot of miles on it and the hose was just plain soft and badly worn I haven't had any reoccurring problems since

What is your mileage now?
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

I now have 325559 miles, I noticed the difference right away when I replaced those two parts.

The TPS may have been just fine but for $38 USD I'm not upset, the worn and soft Turbo intercooler intake hose was most likely collapsing during hot idle starts and also high acceleration ( also under slow speed acceleration there was a weird humming noise) Since I replace the Turbo intercooler intake hose the hot idle problem is gone the weird humming noise is gone and the performance is back.
I also replaced the Turbo boost hose, it was brittle on one end, its in the same area located underneath the air box, why wait for a problem.

To Racerxc70. Thanks for posting this. Have experienced similar, inconsistent issue. MY TPS is now 19yrs old; factory original. I wonder if cleaning it is a possibility? I'll have to look.

As my post stated my TPS is 19 yrs old but I really think that the Turbo intercooler intake hose was really the problem, if yours is like mine was soft and deteriorating that most likely is the problem, this hose connects directly to the Throttle body and it is my belief that time and heat causes it while under pressure from the massive air intake to partially collapse.
The OEM part is about $150 USD the aftermarket hose is about $50 plus new hose clamps, I was able to compare both and they are exactly the same.
I bought my TPS from VOLUPARTS.com $38 plus shipping
