1990 240 cant drive till it warms up

Post by frey068 »

I have this problem on my 1990 240. I have to let it idle for a couple of minutes before I can drive away. If i try to give it gas before that it just dies and restarts but has to idle and warm up first. It runs fine after that. This happens evertime also.I have been giving every bit of advice from replace fuel pump to mass airflow sensor. The fuel filter is new along with a new 02 sensor. I recently also replaced both coolant temp sensors with pretty good junkyard ones.In tank fuel pump is also new. It also does not matter what fuel level its at.

Take a look at your "throttle position sensor". Open the hood and work the throttle by hand. It should make a distictive "click" noise when it closes at the idle position. If it doesn't click, check the adjustment of the adjustable length rod between the round bellcrank (where the throttle cable attaches) and the throttle. Unsnap one end of the rod and see if the throttle sesnor clicks when worked again. If it does then, you need to adjust the rod length to get it to click everytime.

Check this out and let us know what you find.

Thanks. I went out and tried what you said. I adjusted the linkeage and the problem seemed to be much more slight this am before work and after work. Its raining out right now but Im going to adjust it one more turn to see if it helps any more.
