2006 volvo v50 Fob

Post by teatimecrumpet »

Hi,

We lost our extra fob and key for a 2006 volvo v50. I know that we can go to the dealer and get it replaced but hear that it's expensive. I'm waiting to hear back from our local dealer about a price.

Does the FOB just control keyless entry? Or does the programming actually allow it to start the car when you put it in the ignition. Sorry if this is a dumb question. We can live without remote entry but if it's possible to use the metal key to get in and just pop it into an ebay FOB and start the car we'd just do that.

thanks

No, the fob has everything to do with starting the car and that's the part that is expensive to program as it has to be "married" to your car.

The fob incorporates 3 keys:
  • the blade key only opens the door and the glove compartment (and sets off the alarm when you use it!!!).
  • The remote interacts with a receiver above the DIM and controls normal door locking and all that remote stuff.
  • The shank of the key holds a RFID chip that is the ignition key.
Both of the last two functions must be programmed by a dealer or other holder of a functioning VIDA/factory setup.

You can save a bit of money by getting an OEM fob in its blister pack from myswedishparts.com and having the dealer do the programming part. Myswedishparts.com can also cut a new blade key from the VIN.

Make sure the dealer cancels to old fob from the car. You can verify that from the in-car setup menu.
