Could it have gotten coolant in the oil at some point?

Drove it 120 miles round trip to work. The one thing I noticed was some oil splatter on the cover. With the old oil cap it just drizzled into the head. This was a bit more pressurized. It's not an OEM cap but fits tight. Like a $8 Amazon one

So I'm just a parts replacer, not exactly a mechanic... adding everything up I'm thinking with a better seal maybe the pressure knocked something loose and that's what clogged up the filter? Meh I don't know, I'm monitoring the oil level before driving and I'll flush everything out this weekend.

Oh and abscate, I have matt's set up on my Amazon. I'll start throwing him a bone here and there; I buy enough stuff to support a 3rd world country

FML I hope not. I was afraid someone would say that... I guess it's a pain to replace.

Well after a bit of research it seems to be the case. Looks like I need to block out a weekend and tear it apart. Yay.....

Where do you get your oil, Wally World? If so, get rid of it. I've had a few cars misbehave with Walmart oil and once changed with same brand and weight from an auto parts store, things normalized. Now I don't know on sludge tho as I had my customers change it right away so I can't say for sure. Was that oil refined at all? Holy sludge!

Thats pretty S0-Cal- for my SWMBO thats two weeks of commute mileage.

:D :D :D

Dave - if the PCV were clogged you usually get crankcase pressure, not vacuum. I would think that would help keep sludge out if it were caused by dust.

Have you done the glove test? (work glove on the crankcase breather??

If this is a naturally aspirated car, then PCV failure usually causes vacuum in the crankcase. NA cars have a different PCV system design than turbo cars. The splatter on the valve cover looks like positive pressure, but as noted positive pressure would not normally result in lots of dirt getting inside the block.

Did you check the air filter and intake piping? Wonder if dirt is getting sucked in via the intake manifold. I check and clean the air filter every time I change the oil.

With that much sludge in the oil filter based on your regular oil and filter changes I would be dropping the oil pan ASAP.
It must be full of that stuff.
If that is dust or sand it must be very abrasive.
The PCV ports in the block are bound to be clogged also.
