Those look interesting. I think even I could wire one of those up!
Thanks,
Neil.

Does anybody happen to have a picture of the thermo protective thingy? My motors move a little at a time, despite freeing the big nylon wheel inside, and I suspect these resistors may have something to do with it.
And thanks to this thread I can now put separate smaller fuses on the motors, I would never have had this idea! (I disconnected both motors when one started the "one step at a time thing")
Thank you!

If you look at the last photo abscate posted, just under the motor, there are 2 parallel copper strips. Pushed between the 2 strips is a square piece of shiny metal which is pushed in at a 45 degree angle. This is the thermo-resistor. This is usually what fails. But sometimes if you are lucky, stripping the whole unit down, cleaning all the old grease out and re-greasing with high temp. grease can help. Most importantly, remove the shaft for the wiper arm and clean the hole out thoroughly and use some light oil on the shaft when refitting. Make sure the shaft moves easily.
The motor brushes can also get dirty with age. There is a SAAB 9000 website that does a full how-to on this re-build, including opening the motor up and cleaning and lubing it.
I have not found a source of replacement resistors, although some have found other resistors that work the same way and have soldered them between the 2 copper contacts. If you are not concerned about breaking the motors, then you can use a piece of copper wire forced between the 2 contacts. This was the reason for this thread originally.
Neil.
