Here is the video. Not positive the cause of this noise is same as before though, because this time was different then all previous occurrences (as noted above). Don't pay much attention to the actual video, just listen. I was trying to isolate the noise by ear, and was not paying attention to the camera. Should be noted that my phone's microphone and then youtube's compression distorted the sound a fair bit from what it sounds like in person.

Could not hear much in that video even with my sound up. Maybe your cabin is still more sound proof than mine. Mine is so much louder than that and a tad higher pitched, but somewhat similar.

At this age and mileage, it is a "dry bearing noise".

Remove the serp belt and spin each of the following:

- Idler Pulley
- Tensioner Pulley
- Alternator Pulley
- AC Pulley (my bet is the AC pulley free-wheeling).

Yours sounds about the same as mine (as far as the whine), but mine is constant for the first few minutes of running.
I had to have my laptop's volume all the way up to hear my video, but I was able to pick up the whine. Its quiet, but it's there. Like I said, the video didn't pick it up too great. Plus this was inside the car, obviously.
Your lifters sound almost as bad as my cousin's '99 T5. Now I don't think he has some special case of awful lifter tick.

It usually is consistent for the first few minutes after a cold start, now it's not. Diagnosing this problem is almost as infuriating as the problem itself (and I thought fuel relay roulette was bad enough). Hopefully this week the weather will be good enough for me to get the serpentine belt off.

The lifters did not sound bad until I bought premium gas at a Sunoco. Had to siphon all that crap out of the tank at the next station. They still won't at least pay for a new tank of real petrol.

That's interesting. My cousin and I both primarily use the same gas station (QuikTrip) and exclusively run 93 octane. My lifters are virtually silent except every now and again for less than 2 seconds on a cold start. His are CONSTANTLY clicking away.
I'm going to pull my serpentine belt off at some point this week too and make sure this isn't a pulley I'm hearing.

Should I be really concerned about the lifter clicking? Only asking because I was talking to someone today who said I should get it fixed asap (not that I trust their mechanical knowledge). I have a 300+mi roadtrip coming up soon, so I'm trying to make sure everything is in order. Don't need any surprises. Can't quite isolate which cylinder it's coming from over the clicking of the fuel injectors. Is it worth trying some of those oil additives that "fix clicking lifters"?

No, the tick is nothing to worry about. It's fairly common on these cars. I can't say much for additives, that's something for someone else to chime in about. I'm sure someone on this site has used something.
I know Liqui Moly makes additives for lifter tick, but I've never tried them. Liqui Moly is a good reputable brand though, FWIW.

The noises of a volvo. My car lifters can be as quiet as can be, then noisy as can be. Hot or cold , it seems to come and go. No worries, it is normal.
I understand your concern about the "screeching". Drove me nuts. I replaced serp tensenion pulley just to be sure. Now i live with the ticking and screeching. At least my dash is quiet. I just went after an oil leak (rear ex cam seal). The weather was nice. No oil on driveway, just burning smell from ex manifold.

Probably the only way to deal with the lifter tick is to drop the oil pan and replace the pickup tube o-rings. Super common problem, nasty job. It's OK to ride with it.

I love my volvo. Drive it hard (at times). Change oil and filter often (hot). enjoy.
