New owner 2005 V70....need help with Starting

Post by Pomial »

Just bought a 2005 V70 2.4 from a friend of mine. It only came with one key. However the switch blade was broke (key wouldn't stay up) so I ordered a blank key fob with blank key. Then what I did was I switched all the parts of the original key fob with the new one. The key fob locks and unlocks the doors but when I try to start the car...it doesn't start and error "start prevented" comes up. I figured since all I was doing is switching all the internal parts of the key fob and putting it all in new plastic housing, it would work just fine, but obviously I messed something up.

Any way to fix this without having to tow the car to the dealer to get the key/key fob reprogrammed?

Thanks so much

Somehow you didn't move the chip from the old key over.

Try putting the old key parts near the ignition switch to see if it will start. Near means with 2 cm

I threw away the top part of the key fob...not sure where the chip is located. I tried putting the bottom part of the old key fob next to the ignition and same thing...doesn't start

From pictures in the web the chip is in the bottom part of the gob, so hopefully you still have it.

Without the chip the car won't start. If you find it, tape it (no glue!) inside the steering column near the barrel so you don't loose it. Then you can just cut another key and use it to start the car. These keys are very expensive to get from Volvo

I'd get a another key from dealer as spare.
It is not cheap but it is what it is...

Or remove the chip and tape it (never use glue) inside near the ignition barrel, then cut blank keys
