Completely drained the power steering fluid reservoir. Noticed the bottom of it has lots of cruds.
Since I was replacing the alternator, I had removed the feed line, so, I decided to clean up the
reservoir tank.
In re-filling the fluid, would I have to use the same process as if I was flushing it? Am concerned
about the empty supply line and the amount of fluid that might have drained from the pump.
By the way, am using the CHF-202 fluid.
Thanks.

Really no concern. With the engine running turn the wheel lock to lock a few times to clear the air, then check the level again. Just make sure to use the heavy duty screw-clamps. At the pump this is what I did to stop a leak and it worked
but that crud is a concern as it may damage the power steering rack seals. Get a thin wire and attach solidly a magnet - no smaller than 1" - and keep it inside the reservoir for a while - the wire goes out by the cap.

For the crud, I completely removed the tank and sprayed the inside with brake cleaner. Used something to scrape the bottom. Used almost half a can and got the tank really clean. Very surprised how much junk was inside. Had the car for four years and don't know if the previous owner cleaned the tank.
Thanks for the great info. Well appreciated.

the crud is now also inside the rack, maybe try with a magnet see if it attracts the crud?
